5/17/2012 1:09:04 AM
Early times report
Jammu, May 16: Days after the Chancellor NN Vohra empowered Vice Chancellor University of Jammu Prof. MP Singh Ish-ar to undo the wrongs done in the Unive-rsity administration during the tenures of the previous Vice Chancellors as indicated by a committee headed by the Chief Secretary, a scam in the works department has shamed the JU once again.
Sources in the University administration divulge that the officers of the works department of the university have made payments to private firms for non- existent works in The Business School. "An officer of the level of Joint Registrar in the university reported to the Vice Chancellor that payment worth lakhs was made to a private firm against purchase of floor tiles in the business school while the tiles had not been laid" disclosed an authoritative source pleading anonymity. "Taking cognizance of the report, the vice chancellor himself verified the facts and ground and found that the report was correct and the officers of the works department had actually got the payments made for purchase of non- existent tiles.
While the Vice Chancellor has reportedly constituted a committee to fix accountability and bring forth the culprits, sources divulge that the Executive Engineer of the works department Suresh Sharma allegedly conspired to engineer the fictitious deal. Sources also disclosed that Suresh Sharma who is working against the post of executive engineer on the basis of a court order has been referred to in the report of the committee headed by the chief secretary for alleged bungling in the construction and furnishing of the new block of the vice chancellor's secretariat that came up during the tenure of Prof. Varun Sahni.
Even as the Vice chancellor Prof. MP Singh Ishar has ordered an enquiry into the alleged fraud, no action has been taken against the officers of the works department.
