CBI tightens its noose, traps ADEO-Western Command for graft

Jammu, May 16: The central anti graft agency, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Jammu Branch continuing its endeavour to weed out corruption in central departments including defence and its allied department today held one Assistant Defence Estate Officer (ADEO), Western Command soon after it raided the residences of some defence estate officials in Jammu and Srinagar few days back.
Official sources said that CBI Team from Jammu today arrested an Assistant Defence Estate Officer, Western command at Chandigarh for taking graft from the brother of lawyer to get the selection of his brother as State Defence Officer (SDO).
As per authoritative sources the accused Mukesh Khurana, Assistant Defence Estate Officer, Western command, was caught red-handed at Chandigarh by sleuths of CBI Jammu while demanding and accepting bribe of Rs 15,000/- as initial installment from complainant Shokat Ali son of Munir Hussain R/o Kotedhar, Rajouri, a lawyer. According to sources the complainant has alleged the accused has asked for a bribe for selecting his brother as SDO Grade III in Defence Estates Organization in Northern Command. "The complainant in his complainant alleged that his brother had stood at number 2 under ST candidates in the exam of SDO grade III in Defence Estate Organisation held in January 2012 at Chandigarh, sources said. Sources added that complainant has alleged that Assistant Defence Estate Officer, Mukesh Khurana, demanded bribe of Rs2.5 lakh for getting his brother selected as SDO Grade III in place of candidate at S.No 1 and demanded the initial installment at his office in Chandigarh.
A complaint was lodged with CBI which laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while accepting bribe in presence of independent witnesses. Regular case has been registered under relevant sections of the J&K Prevention of Corruption Act against Mukesh Khurana. The accused will be produced before the CBI Court for remand, sources said. It is Pertinent to mention here that the incident occurred just five days after when CBI registered a case against Defence Ministry officials and others as part of its probe into alleged irregularities in the sale of military land near the high-security Srinagar airport on May 11 and carried out searches at various places in Jammu, Srinagar, Patna, Delhi and Chandigarh.
During the preliminary probe of the Defence Ministry, it was found that more than 70 NOCs were issued by the defence estates department in Srinagar during the last four years. These NOCs were issued to private parties to buy more than 200 acres of land near high-security military installations in Srinagar.
