Professor Bhat only renewed Hurriyat's call for "realism" | | Early Times Report | 5/18/2012 10:56:58 AM |
| Srinagar, May17: Politics is the art of possibility and former chairman of Hurriyat Conference professor Abdul Gani Bhat seems to know it all. The man whom other separatists projected as an alien and "a man from nowhere" is calling the shots leaving his companions with no option other than to react to his off and on assertions. Though Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has been the most known and highly mobile face of the conglomerate but professor Bhat's innocuous assertion that UN resolutions cannot be implemented for resolving Kashmir issue in view of the prevailing situation in the sub-continent and around the globe has brought him at the centre of the controversy with Mirwaiz and opponents of Bhat only revolving around him and that is politics. However, the controversial statement did not help in as much as Bhat wanted that people should debate it which has not happened. An orator, Bhat never missed a chance of identifying himself with the changing contours of global politics. As such Bhat is the only separatist leader who could think and talk "out of box"- a vocabulary often draw on by General Parvez Musharaf and Atal Bihari Vajpayee followed by Dr. Manmohan Singh as the conscience keepers of a relationship hallowed by trust deficit. However, observers do believe that Bhat's posturing is actually aimed at renewing Hurriyat's call for 'realism' to seek solution to the Kashmir problem.Since the failure of 2010 agitation , both factions of Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz and Sayeed Ali Shah Geelani have undergone impressive changes in their perception and if this is any indication, the separatist leaders are ready to lead the way with new initiatives. In 2011 call for 'realism' came when the Mirwaiz led Hurriyat Conference leaders while attending a seminar in Srinagar called for reassessment of their strategies. I remember at that point of time Mirwaiz in his most impressive form had said that 'you don't get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate'. While the call for 'realism' and working towards achievable ambitions is a positive and a very welcome change, it seems that the Hurriyat leadership is repeating its previous mistakes by failing to debate its policies even within their own ranks. Outburst of separatist leaders Shabir Shah, Nayeem Khan and Azam Inquilabi on Bhat's latest assertions shows that the Hurriyat leadership is prone to fallacies of the past and has not created enough consensus within its ranks before floating significant and new ideas for political engagement. In addition, the Hurriyat Conference will have to renegotiate with other important Kashmiri leaders like Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Yasin Malik without whom any move towards reconciliation or reconfiguration of the Kashmiri politics is meaningless. Further, the Hurriyat Conference has to move from its traditional stand of bashing pro-India politicians and seek a constructive engagement with parties like National Conference and People's Democratic Party. Moreover, the Hurriyat Conference needs to strengthen its central authority and provide a singular command of leadership without any competing agendas from its constituents. |
