Hurt in road mishap, truck driver appeals for help | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 19: As a truck driver, Prem Pal Singh (50) hardly got an opportunity to sleep at home as he spent his time travelling from one destination to another to keep the kitchen fire burning. During these days, he never got time to take proper rest. But the fateful day of November 28, 2002, changed his life forever. Since then, he is bed-ridden and cannot sleep. Coming from Srinagar to Jammu, he met with an accident near Dogra Chowk, Kud, and suffered critical spinal injury that left him paralytic. The truck, he was driving, had developed a technical snag and fallen into a gorge. Prem Pal, originally a resident of Fatehpura in Baramulla, had migrated to Jammu in 1990. At present, he is living in Jagti township. While working as a truck driver, he earned enough money to look after his family which included his wife and four daughters. But during the past 10 years, he has not earned a single penny. Whatever meager resources he had in his kitty have been spent on his treatment and medications. Ninety per cent of the monthly monetary assistance is spent on his medical bills. "I get Rs 5,000 as relief. Out of it, Rs 4,000 are spent on my medical bills. As I have no other source of income, I appeal to the state government to extend some help to my family," he said. His daughters are working hard and looking after him but none of them is employed. They take tuition classes to support their own studies and help their mother in the household work. |
