Sagar is simply kidding Kashmiri separatists | Behind the veil | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 19: When the National Conference led Government has nothing to gloat about, nothing to beguile on,it has started deriving pleasure and satisfaction from vague gestures of the separatists believing they were ready to join the national mainstream. When a couple of leaders belonging to APHC, including its chairman, Molvi Umar Farooq and a senior leader,Prof.Abdul Gani Bhat, spoke about various issues concerning the governance in Jammu and Kashmir the ruling coalition in general and the National Conference leaders in particular took it,rather mistook it,for their willingness to be part of the mainstream politics. It is nothing but ludicrous or silly on the part of the NC leadership to discern change of heart in Molvi Umar Farooq when he talked about peoples'difficulties because of power and drinking water crisis and on account of inflation in the prices of essential commodities. The NC leadership seemed to have felt excited and elated when the Molvi expressed concern over poor growth of Kashmiri language and Prof.Bhat saying that implementation of the UN resolution on Kashmir was impracticable. The NC leaders were so much taken in by these statements that the Law Minister,Ali Mohd.Sagar, announced that Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah was ready to step down if the separatists joined the mainstream political activity and participated in the elections. Welcoming the recent statements of separatists on governance issues, Minister for Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Rural Development, Ali Mohammad Sagar, has said the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah was ready to step down if the separatist leaders are willing to become a part of the mainstream politics and contest polls. "It is really heartening to see separatists talking about development and governance issues. We welcome this change of heart and will take their criticism positively," Sagar has stated.Sagar has made it clear that development cannot remain hostage to the resolution of Kashmir issue. "Though the political solution of Kashmir is a prerequisite for overall peace and progress but at the same time we have to think about the day to day problems of the common people," he said. Is Sagar kidding the separatists or is he interested in motivating them for contesting the Assembly election? Indications are that Sagar is kidding the separatists because he knows it better than politicians hailing from Jammu and Ladakh that circumstances do not favour separatists taking part in the Assembly elections. Two factors weigh heavy against separatists if they wish to take part in the poll process.First, they are not sure of their success in winning even simple majority in the 87-member Assembly.Secondly, once they take part in the elections it would be construed as their support for the status quo in Kashmir and that would force them to shut their shops. .Hence Sagar is,on one hand, kidding the separatists and ,on the other hand, projecting Omar Abdullah as a matured leader who is ready to sacrifice or leave the cosy chair of Chief Ministership in the interest of the nation which, according to Sagar ,is allowing the separatists to participate in the elections and join the mainstream politics. One thing is definite.Neither Omar Abdullah will step down for paving the way for the separatists to participate in the Assembly poll nor the separatists, even the moderates except for Sajjad Lone, chief of Peoples'Conference, are prepared to take part in the poll process.
