Signs of thaw discernible in JK Congress | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 20 : Signs of thaw between two factions in the state unit of the Congress have become discernible in recent days after the party high command asked the two AICC general secretaries, Janardhan Diwedi and Mohan Prakash to initiate tough measures for bringing about reconciliation between Saif-ud-Din Soz and Ghulam Nabi Azad. The first indication of a truce between the two factions became visible when Azad and Soz addressed a joint press conference after the end of a day-long Congress delegates meet in Srinagar. Those in the Congress who have seen a positive development in the party, otherwise plagued by factional feuds, said that prior to the Congress convention Soz and Azad would invariably avoid seeing each other. They would seldom talk to each other and were seldom seen together at a public rally or at a party function during the last over one year. The second hint on a thaw was known when the AICC Chief, Sonia Gandhi, favoured equal share of supporters of Soz and Azad in the Pradesh Congress Committee. The party high command has suggested to the party ministers, legislators, presidents of district and block committees to choose the office bearers of the PCC through the ballot system. The state unit of the Congress instead authorized Sonia Gandhi to select office bearers for the PCC. Congress sources said that the Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand, who is an Azad loyalist, moved a resolution requesting Sonia Gandhi to choose all the PCC office bearers, which was adopted at the party convention in Srinagar ,was part of his plan of avoiding fresh tussle between supporters of Azad and Soz. Even if a temporary truce between Azad group and Soz led camp has been forged a large number of congressmen have started forming a new group after they were not invited to the Congress convention in Srinagar. These congressmen are fence sitters and their complaint is that only those in the Congress were heard and given importance who were loyal either to the Azad led camp or to the Soz headed faction. They have urged Sonia Gandhi to crack the whip on those party leaders who try to perpetuate groupism in the Congress. |
