Is Bollywood biased towards Ladakh? | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 20 : The Bollywood has its existence since the year 1896, it was the Lumiere Brothers who introduced the art of cinema to the sub-continent. Bombay, as it was then called, was the first Indian city to screen cinematography, six short films by these cinematic pioneers. Although, the film industry in India has grown in terms of precision and quality in movies however, the individuals involved in film making haven't grown enough to be all inclusive and they still carry certain biases with them. The Bollywood's bias towards Ladakh is well exhibited in the Ladakh International Film Festival (LIFF) - highest movie festival in the world-which is expected to kicks off from June 15 to 17, 2012 in Ladakh as it has created controversies in Jammu and Kashmir regions of the state. The aims of the festival is to draw attention of the world and the world cinema towards the beauty of the region. Ladakh's endangered species, Snow Leopard, is the mascot for the film festival. The film makers from Jammu and Kashmir allege the festival authorities of discrimination on basis of 'ethnicity and regionalism'. The festival authority has been categorized into four sections, namely World Cinema, Indian Cinema, Competition and Ladakh. While the World Cinema category is open only to international films, the Indian Cinema section is open only to films made in India. The competition section will include feature films, short films, animation films and documentary films, while the Ladakh section will include only films made by the residents of Ladakh and films made on Ladakh. Chaired by Shyam Benegal, LIFF patrons include a mix of senior film professionals and young, enthusiastic cine lovers from India and overseas. According to the local film makers the festival is happening in J&K, Ladakh is part of the state and not a separate state. By keeping a separate section for the Ladakh, the authorities are undermining the film makers from Jammu and Kashmir regions of the state. This shows their biasness towards Ladakh. The festival authority makes mention of separate section for the Ladakh region. "Ladakh section aims at exploring new creative talent among Ladakhis and also to promote films made on Ladakh, by providing an opportunity to showcase their work in the process of exploring the magic of cinema in the magical land of Ladakh. Films in any format including their Mobile phones are accepted in this section. This section is open to only RESIDENTS OF LADAKH AND FILMS MADE ON LADAKH. This section includes feature film, short film, animation films and documentary films," the festival authorities mentions. The film makers from Jammu and Kashmir regions of the state question the festival authority's intention for keeping a separate section for Ladakh. "If there is separate section for Ladakhis, why other regions are left out?" local film makers ask. Most of the film maker from Jammu and Kashmir region demand that the LIFF festival authority should amend the Ladakh section and include film makers from Jammu and Kashmir and not restrict it to Ladakhis only. While others believe that the Bollywood is focusing much on the Ladakh region and ignoring Jammu and Kashmir regions of the state which should have not be the case. The film industry has flourished from Kashmir. There are talented film makers from the valley who have number of films on Ladakh by keeping a separate section and open only to residents of Ladakh they are discriminating. This way they are discouraging the film makers from the valley, many film makers here believe. Other have gone to the extent that they say the festival authorities are segregating the film industry of the state. The festival should not be region specific. The whole state should be given entry in the Ladakh section as aim of the authority should be to promote |
