Infants' death: Doctor, para-medicos shifted from G B Pant hospital | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 20 : Concerned over high number of infants' death in GB Pant Hospital, evoking massive protests, the Jammu and Kashmir government shifted nine doctors, para-medical staff and others from G B Pant hospital here. Talking to reporters, Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said the high number of infants' death at GB Panth children Hospital in Srinagar was 'a matter of shame'. "It is unfortunate and a matter of shame that such things happen in a state capital. One could understand if it had happened in some remote area," Dr Azad said. "I will personally visit the hospital today," Dr Azad said. However, he said it was a responsibility of the state to provide health facilities to its citizens. An official spokesman said Dr Muneer Masoodi has been appointed Medical Superintendent of the G B Pant Hospital, where about 370 children have died since January this year. Last week, Medical Superintendent of the hospital was removed and attached with health department. He said also those transferred from the G B Pant hospital included Dr Shafqat Rasool, Assistant Surgeon, Ms Girja Pandita Senior Garde Nurse, Shabir Ahamd, Stenographer, Javid Ahmad Senior Assistant, Zahoor Ahmad Senior Assistant, Shamima, Junior Assistant, Rauf Ahmad Lab Assistant, Mukhtar, Sanitary Inspector and Ghulam Mohammad Sofi, Storekeeper Drugs. Dr Azad asked National Conference-led coalition government to pay attention towards the situation at the institute. In 2010, the Government Medical College (GMC) had sounded a caution to the government about dire need for construction of 400-bed capacity children hospital citing that the GB Pant has already crossed the limits to handle load of patients and number of referrals. Against the capacity of 200 beds, only 135 beds are spared for children healthcare at the G B Pant, while 15 are meant for general surgeries, 15 for medicine and 35 for maternity. The Union Health Minister, who is former Chief Minister of the state, said soon after he took over the Health Ministry in the UPA-II, he had allocated Rs 62 crore for construction of one each tertiary care institutes at Srinagar and Jammu. At Srinagar, he said the land was identified for construction of the institute near the Haj house at Bemina during his tenure as state Chief Minister. Expressing displeasure at non-action by state on construction of hospital, he said,"The land is available and the funds are available, the hospital has to be built by the state not us." |
