Sheikh Nazir must speak out | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 20: The senior most member of he National Conference, Sheikh Nazir who is an eyewitness to many historical events hates to talk about history. Very few scribes have succeeded in interviewing him and those who have spoken to him could not extract the ‘heavily guarded’ secrets. People close to Nazir say that the veteran leader holds a trunk dear to him. The ‘revered’ trunk, they said, lies beneath his bed. Nobody is allowed to open it. The trunk, they said, contains historical documents of importance. The documents can tell a lot about history of Jammu Kashmir and the National Conference leadership. Nazir has never been given the respect due to him although he happens to be a member of the Sheikh family; he has always lived in isolation. He is considered a staunch anti-Indian. He does not hold an Indian passport and has traveled by Indian planes only once in 2010 when he was reluctantly flown to New Delhi for treatment. Nazir was awakened after more than three decades of hibernation a few years ago to `give a separatist face' to the National Conference. He was seen kicking off NC membership drive from Budgam. For the first time in his political career, he was seen in political and social functions. Nazir was very active during the Plebiscite Front movement and was not liked by NC's seemingly `pro-Indian' leadership especially Sher-e-Kashmir and Dr Farooq Abdullah. However, Omar Abdullah tried to use him as a poster boy but could not get the desired results. Unfortunately for Nazir, his leaders chose to use him at a time when Kashmir had changed drastically. But the ailing Nazir owes a duty to the people of the state. He must speak now to unveil mysteries. The information that he has concealed unnecessarily must be shared with genuine people before it is too late. |
