Police to be equipped with AK rifles

JAMMU, May 21: As was the case with the central paramilitary forces the jawans and officers in the Jammu and Kashmir state police were being equipped with AK-47 and AK-56 rifles for tackling any eventuality, especially militant s who were being given sophisticated weapons for carrying out acts of subversion and sabotage.
Police sources said that since 1990,when militancy took roots in the State, policemen and officers were being given assault rifles after it was found that the .303 guns were no match to the AK-47 rifles being used by the militants.A senior police officer said that between 1990 and 2011 more than 32,000 AK series rifles had been seized from the militants in various operations launched by the security forces in different parts of Jammu and Kashmir.He said that most of these rifles had been given to the police and the paramilitary forces.
He said that since 1990 it has been a regular process for equipping police force with AK series rifles, SLRs and other sophisticated weapons.
The Officer said that in the entire country the Russian rifles have been far superior to those from America and France. The Union Home Ministry has provided more than 30,000 AK series rifles to men of the CRPF, BSF, ITBP, CISF and other forces.
The Ministry has laid emphasis on equipping all para military forces, deployed in the Naxal and Maoist affected areas,so that the security forces could enjoy the upper hand against the rebels.
The police officer said that the st ate Government has requested the union Home Ministry to formulate a fresh policy on modernising the weaponry for the police in Jammu and Kashmir. He said since the police was to replace the CR PF and the BSF in Jammu and
Kashmir there was need for equipping the police with latest AK series weapons besides new communication gadgets and transport system. The state Government has conveyed to the Union Home Ministry that there was need for improving the mobility of the police which could be achieved if all men and officers were provided with sophisticated weapons and lat est communication gadgets and transport system.
He said that to begin with at least 10,000 assault rifles were needed so that all the fresh recruits wer e given these AK series rifles.
