Can Govt escape responsibility? | GB Panth deaths | | Early Times Report Srinagar, May 21: No doctor can kill his patient willfully. This is what most of the medicos in GB Panth Hospital have to say in response to the death of infants in the hospital. According to them, the government must accept responsibility for the deaths. "The vital equipment needed in a childrens' hospital has been made available now. Had the government provided the equipment earlier, many a death could be prevented. If the hospital lacks equipment, the blame must lie somewhere else", said a doctor preferring anonymity. The GB Panth hospital is currently in news for increased mortality rate. As per media reports more than 360 infants have died in the hospital during the recent past. The administration took a serious note of the media reports and effected some changes in the hospital. The superintendent was sacked and a few ventilators were rushed to the hospital. The leader of opposition and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president, Mahbooba Mufti while expressing shock over the deaths held the government responsible for the mess in the hospital. "The state government has failed to add to the facility for the treatment of children after 2005 when G B Panth hospital was started not because of lack of resources but as a result of the lack of will and political direction. She said it was only because the government could not find the right contractor to construct 200 bedded hospitals sanctioned by Cental Government for Srinagar and Jammu which resulted in mass murder of babies in Kashmir", she said. A paramedic in the hospital gave reasons for what is believed to be a high mortality rate. "This is the only hospital for children in Kashmir valley. People from all parts of Kashmir and at times from Doda and Kishtwar bring their ailing babies for treatment. A hospital that lacks proper equipment and staff cannot be expected to cater to large number of patients that it receives every day", he said. A mother from a remote Kupwara village holds the shifting of the hospital from the vicinity of Valley only's maternity hospital, Lal Ded. Narrating her painful experiences, she said: "When my new born was undergoing treatment in GB Panth Hospital, I was called to suckle it. I was in Lal Ded and had to rush to feed my baby. Fortunately, I reached in time and my baby survived", she said. According to her, the hospital has to be shifted to its original place so that mothers attend their babies in time when needed. |
