Sports, cultural activities imperative for personality development: Gul | Chess championship concludes | | early times report UDHAMPUR, May 22 : Advisor to Chief Minister, Mubarak Gul has said that sports and cultural events play a vital role in channelizing youth energies in a right direction besides creating a disciplined and harmonious society. Gul, who was the chief guest, was speaking at the concluding function of 15th District Level Open Chess Championship and Dance Competition-2012 organized by J&K Rural Development Society (JKR-DS) in collaboration with District Chess Association and Mind 'n' Rhythm, an institute of creative arts, Udhampur here last evening. The events were organized in the memory of Sher-e-Kashmir late Sheikh Mohd Abd-ullah at Udhampur in which 255 chess players of the district and 20 dance groups participated under different categories. District Development Commissioner, P.K Pole, SSP, Ash-koor Wani, Add. SP, Binam Tosh, Chairman JKR DS, Sat Paul Sharma, Director, Mind 'n' Rythm, Anil Sharma, PRO of the Society, Surjeet Singh Manhas prominent persons and sports lover were present on the occasion. Complementing the members of the Society for holding such a mega event in the district, Gul said that their sincere efforts would go a long way in spotting the hidden sports and cultural talent in a big way. He asked the youngsters to take part in co-curricular activities in addition to their academic education for the overall personality development. Recalling the selfless services of Sher-e-Kashmir, Late Sheikh Mohd Abdullah for the overall welfare of people of the state, Gul said that it was all due to the foundation laid by Sher-e-Kashmir that our state is witnessing a fast track progress and prosperity at the present time. He said that initiatives of Late Abdullah like 'land to tiller' had brought revolutionary change in the socio-economic status of the entire state. Gul called for educating people about the RTI Act and Public Service Guarantee Act so that common masses could avail benefits in a time line manner. He exhorted upon the people to come forward and share their noble responsibility for making the state more peaceful and developed. He said that a person must plant a tree once in a year for healthy living. In this regard, he asked Deputy Commissioner to involve students of educational institutions to launch a vigorous plantation drive in the district for the sustenance of life on earth. He also distributed prizes among the winners of both events. Renu Bala and Khazan Singh declared winner of 15th District Level Open Chess Championship and Open Dance Competition-2012 respectively. Besides, Dhoom Talent Youth Club and Aryan Dogra clinched 2nd & 3rd position in Open Dance Competition. Similarly Jiwan and Sarika conquered first rank in the Chess competition Under 14 Boys & Girls respectively, while Arun Kumar and Kiran Anthal won the first position in the Chess competition Under 19 Boys & Girls respectively. Later, in a meeting with senior officers of district administration including DDC and SSP, the Advisor reviewed the pace of development activities and law and order situation in the district. |
