Women theatre workshop concludes at GCW Parade | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 22 : The Week long women Theatre Workshop organised by J&K Academy of Art Culture and Languages (JKAACL) in collaboration with Hindi Sahitya Mandal concluded here today at Government Women College Parade (GWCP). The Week long theatre workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation of the college students in the series of sessions with renowned theatre personality Pritam Katoch who taught them the techniques and skills of the theatre art. The valedictory function was attended by the Joint Director Information Jammu, Soujanya Sharma, former JKAACL secretary, Prof. Rita Jatinder and Senior Announcer Radio Kashmir Jammu (RKJ) Madhvi Sharma. The students, who participated in the workshop, staged a play 'Sehma Sehma sa Inqlab' depicting the challenges a girl faces from her birth and in the later life. Speaking on the occasion, Joint Director, Information, Soujanya Sharma threw light on the theatre traditions and said that it is the oldest medium of entertainment dating back to the Greek times. He said even in India Theatre has remained a very popular form of entertainment and medium to convey the social, religious and moral messages among the public. He said Ram Lila has remained centuries old feature of Indian civilisation and faith where the artists used to perform the scenes from Ramyana. He also referred to various folk theatre traditions in India and said that these were used to highlight the evils in the social milieu, side by side serving the purpose of entertainment. Soujanya said that with the advent of cinema and television, this most effective medium of entertainment and mass communication has lost its importance. He called for the revival of theatre and said that the same could be effectively used for spreading awareness against social evils like female foeticide, dowry and other crimes against women. The Joint Director congratulated the students who participated in the workshop and said that the Information Department would provide them an opportunity to stage the play they rehearsal during the workshop. Later, the Principal of the Government College for Women, Parade, Dr Kiran Bakshi thanked the gusts and resource person for showing keen interest in the college workshop and giving suggestions for further improvement. Among others college Staff, students and prominent citizens, were also present at the valedictory function. |
