Srinagar,May23: Lead by the Joint Consultative Committee (JCC), employees of Jammu and Kashmir Government today held a strong demonstration at the Raj Bhavan demanding an increase in retirement age and regularisation of daily wagers. Hundreds of employees marched towards Raj Bhavan situated on the shores of world famous Dal Lake to register their protest against what they termed insensitivity of the Government led by Omar Abdullah in mitigating their problems which include enhancement of retirement age from present 58 to 60 years. The march came ahead of their scheduled 3 day strike from May 24 to press for their demands. The protesting employees were stopped by the heavy contingent of police deployed near Grand Palace hotel, however, employees gave a stiff resistance after which police resorted to heavy cane charging injuring dozens of employees and were chased away and foiled the march. Over 4.5 lakh Government employees will go on a strike and make it successful so that the government fulfils our long-pending demands which they had agreed earlier but were not implemented, he said. There will be a total pen down strike for three days and on May 25, employees will ghearao the civil secretariat and march to Raj Bhavan in Srinagar on May 26 to hold protest demonstration in support of the demands.
Talking to Early Times, president JCC Muhammad Khursheed Alam said that the Government has failed in fulfilling its commitment forcing the employees to take to streets. "It is unfortunate that the State Government is applying delay dallying tactics, there was an agreement between the state government and the employees bodies but it is backtracking from its own commitments which is very unfortunate" said Aalam.
It is worth while to mention here that JCC had threatened to dislodge the Government after which Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had said the demand for enhancement of their retirement age was under consideration of his Government. However, the employees decided to go ahead with their program of 3-day strike from May 24 saying that the statement of Chief Minister was an eye wash. " We are not demanding skies, our just and genuine demand is enhancement of retirement age from 58 to 60 years, payment of pending 6th pay commission arrears, removal of pay anomalies and regularisation of daily wagers and contractual employees" said Aalam. Meanwhile, State Government today made several attempts to convince the employees not to go on strike but failed as the employees wanted substantial assurance from the government on
their demands. Stalemate continues till last reports came in. Commissioner, General Administration Department held a special meeting with JCC leaders and asked them to call off their proposed strike. He called us for meeting and insisted for calling off the strike, Mohammad Khursheed Alam told Early Times adding that the employees and JCC leaders made it clear to the Commissioner that the JCC would not call off the strike unless their demands are met.
