Amarnath Board can't rely on one-way information | | | early times report Jammu, May 23: The Amarnath Shrine Board has been repeatedly issuing press statements and pictures about fresh snowfall along the Amarnathji track. The Board is taking it as a peg to substantiate its decision on shortening the duration of yatra and giving enough signals it could be reduced further. The fact remains as that as Yatra has become hugely controversial issue, with right wing in either side having extreme view, the statements and pictures can't be taken on their face value. This one sided movement of information is only adding to suspicion and apprehension rather than subsiding it. The apprehensions and suspicions and not ill founded and without any substance. The way yatra has been politicized and there has been strong opposition to it from separatist camp, there is a genuine apprehension that government is succumbing to the diktats of the valley based hardliners. The bad weather is not the only reason for lessening duration of yatra. People at the helm of affairs of managing the yatra had in private conceded that government is not interested in its longer duration. The shortening of yatra had already started generating enough reactions across the board. The right wing hindu parties and BJP too, have issued statement against it and have had also staged some protest. These statements and protests may seem subdued but have the potential of turning into explosive. The government can ill afford to have exploit situation when the situation is peaceful and the peace dividends are being shared by the people especially in valley, which is witnessing tourist boom. The report of the committee, headed by some spiritual guru, on which the Board is banking, can't be taken on face value. People have started questioning the credibility of spiritual gurus and this needs to be corrected. Had the government been serious, it should asked Metro Man E Sreedharan to chair a committee, hold frequent air surveys of the track and then suggest some measures. Going by the credibility of this man the suggestion and report should have carried some weight. But the government did miss the opportunity. However, it still has time in its hand. It can still take some persons with impeccable credibility and track record for the aerial survey and then made their views public. The Union Home Minister was today on a State’s visit and had he been too sincere he should have himself done the survey.
