Omar quite adept in dinner diplomacy | | | DINNER diplomacy is as old as diplomatic intrigues. If politicians of various hues displayed their diplomatic skills during the dinner hosted by Prime Minister, Man-mohan Singh, in New Delhi on Tuesday in connection with the third anniversary of the Congress led UPA Government there was nothing abnormal about it. If not anything else the dinner demonstrated new alignments. The biggest gain the Congress could boast of was the way the Samajwadi Party supremo, Mulayam Singh Yadav, displayed the UPA performance card more vigorously than those who have been sharing power with the Congress in the centre. Both Mulayam Singh and Lalu Prasad Yadav stole the thunder in the dinner party because both of them have been giving outside support to the Congress led UPA Government. This way the presence of two Yadavs at the dinner fully compensated for the absence of the TMC supremo, Mamata Banerjee. Mamata Banerjee has been part of the UPA Government. Her partymen are members of the council of ministers headed by Manmohan Singh. But since last one year, when she moved from Delhi to Kolkatta to head the TMC led Government, after dismantling the leftists, she has been seen in the role of an opposition within the UPA. But the Congress led UPA Government's sagging morale received a boost from the unconditional support it has received from the two Yadavs. Since Sajawadi party has 22 members in the Lok Sabha and absolute majority in the UP Assembly its support to the UPA Government is quite significant and that too when the Presidential election is round the corner. The political combinations were being rest ructured at the national level in such a way as it may not be very very important for the Congress led UPA Government to bank on the support of the TMC which has 19 members in the Lok Sabha for the success of the Congress nominee for the Presidential poll. And the National Conference leadership, that shares power with the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir, has alr eady come to know that the UPA Government was no longer sitting on a weak wicket. As such the NC leadership plans fresh moves on keeping the Congress high command in good humour. If it continues to indulge in either kidding or needling the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir it is the result of local compulsions. Reports indicate that congress bashing within the state of Jammu and Kashmir is simply for local consumption and not for any export to New Delhi. It is part of this exercise that Omar Abdullah managed to find time to attend the PM's dinner. Omar Abdullah joined the dinner hosted by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Tuesday evening to mark the 3rd anniversary of UPA-II government in power. The Kashmir Chief Minister spent less time on his plate and spent more time on his PR work. He exchanged wishes with the Prime Minister and other dignitaries and interacted with union leadership on the sidelines. This was done to show to his critics not only in the PDP but also within the ruling coalition that he continued to be quite close to Man-mohan Singh and the AICC leadership. Demonstration of his close equation with the leadership of the UPA Government was necessary for Omar Abdullah to convey to his critics that he was going to head the Government in Jammu an Kashmir for the remaining three years also.
