Differences over water in Hatli
5/24/2012 10:48:22 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
KATHUA, May 24: The villagers of village Rasooh, Hatli Panchayat organized a protest rally from Shaheedi Chowk to the office of SSP Kathua against the continued injustice being inflicted on them. The matter goes months back when the upper castes of the village prohibited them from fetching waters from the common well. The matter was arbitrated by DC Kathua and the concerned police officials but to the dismay of these marginal castes, the so called upper castes again started troubling them. These protestors alleged that the administration is taking the side of upper caste people and shouted slogans against it. "In spite of coercion we remained in Hinduism but to our surprise, these caste Hindus have never accepted us" said Neelam Devi. Everyone has gone against us and neither from the administration nor from the police is ready to help us. They only pay a lip service and always take sides with these upper castes. Sardari Lal further complained that SHO Lakhanpur is hand in gloves with these discriminators and threatens us. He further went ahead to complain against MP Lal Singh who has assured his peer caste members to do anything and he would see to the consequences. He claims to have clandestine relations with the police and encourages his caste members to commit violence on poors. Som Lal Majotra under whose leadership the protest was organized lamented that even after 65 years of independence and passage of SC/ST prevention of atrocities act, caste system and discrimination is being openly practiced and poor individuals are not allowed to live with dignity. He also lamented on the role of police and district administration who have completely failed in performing their duties even after repeated requests. In spite of repeated complaints and deputations, no substantial action has been taken so far by the administration and this is the reason why there are repeated acts of violence on them.
