LT Gen Hasnain's Suggestion What will Kashmiri Hindus do in Valley? | | | Rustam JAMMU, May 24: General Officer Commanding (GOC) 15 Corps, Lt Gen S A Hasnain on May 21 said that "this is the most opportune time for facilitating the return of the Kashmiri Pandits to their homes which in itself will be a major indicator of peace and tranquility in the Valley'' and that the "Army would provide all possible help to facilitate the rehabilitation and return of Kashmiri Pandits to Valley". "Their return to their homes will be the most essential milestone for restoration of everlasting peace in Kashmir," he also said. He made these suggestions while addressing a function organized by the Army at Migrant Camp Vessu in which he was the chief guest. The Deputy Commissioner Kulgam was also present on the occasion. Nearly 600 camp inmates as well as members of the minority community putting up in different parts of the Kashmir Valley attended the function and highlighted the issues facing them. It appears that this function was organized at the behest of Kashmiri Hindus like Vinod Pandit who have been masquerading as representatives of the displaced Kashmiri Hindus and promoting their own personal interests. Vinod Pandit is the so-called chairman of All-Party Migrant Coordination Committee. He also spoke on the occasion and - apart from demanding construction of a community hall and setting up of computer laboratory and gym at Vessu for the members of the minority community -- urged the Army to bring the minorities and migrants and non-migrants under the purview of its Sadbhavana Operation so that they are also benefited like the majority community. The internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus want to go back to their original habitat. They did not leave salubrious Kashmir on their own. They left the Valley in early 1990 leaving behind their houses, business establishments, orchards and what not worth billions of crores when the fanatics and the so-called freedom fighters in Kashmir left them with no other option but to quit and suffer as refugees in their own motherland. Ironically, the authorities in New Delhi did not intervene in the real sense of the term. In fact, they watched the persecution of the Kashmiri Hindus and their exodus as mute spectators. It is all history. Lt. Gen. Hasnain, like the Government of India, Jammu and Kashmir Government and Kashmiri separatists, want the displaced Kashmiri Hindus to return to the Valley. Fair enough. But the question is: Can the displaced Kashmiri Hindus return to Kashmir and what will they do there in case they returned to their original homes and hearths? They can return to Kashmir provided they are willing to join the hate-India campaign which has been going on in Kashmir, particularly since the late 1980s. Similarly, they can return to Kashmir provided they are willing to live at the mercy of those involved in anti-India struggle, which is patently communal. The fact of the matter is that there are reports that those who got employment in Kashmir under the Prime Minister's employment package for Kashmiri Hindus have been thinking in terms of quitting the Valley. According to insiders, most of those who joined Government service in Kashmir under the Prime Minister's employment package during the last few months are in a state of trauma. According to them, many of them have even approached the authorities in New Delhi urging them to transfer them to Jammu or elsewhere outside the Kashmir Valley. This is the ground situation in Kashmir. It is clear that the internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus will not return to the Valley under the prevailing situation. They have not forgotten what was done o them in 1989-1990. The bitter memories of the genocide continue to linger in their mind. No displaced Kashmiri Hindu with any self-respect would return to the Valley at this point in time, as he/she knows that their return would not only add to their woes but also help the communalists in Kashmir convince the international community that their movement is secular and that the Kashmiri Hindus are very much part of the anti-India crusade. Yes, they can go back to Kashmir provided the Government of India is willing to set up for the over 3 lakh displaced Kashmiri Hindus a separate homeland in the Valley itself invested with the status of Union Territory. Since the authorities in New Delhi and those at the helm in Jammu & Kashmir are opposed to the idea of setting up of a separate homeland for them, the question of their return to the Valley doesn't arise. Lt. Gen. Hasnain is, it appears, living in a fool's paradise. |
