March to Raj Bhawan foiled; police baton charge employees, arrests over 200 | Govt employees call for 4 days strike | | Early Times Report Srinagar, May 26 : The Jammu and Kashmir state government employees toughened their stand today by extending strike by 4 more days, beginning from Monday while their march to Raj Bhawan was foiled by the police and over 200 of them were arrested. The announcement of fresh strike was made at Lal Chowk, Srinagar, this afternoon after large scale arrests of employees by police and failure on part of government to concede to their demands. Around 2000 employees gathered at Srinagar's city centre, Lal Chowk and started their march towards Rajbhawan. The march culminated at Regal Chowk as police charged batons on employees and arrested over 200 of them. The employees march to Rajbhawan started this afternoon from Lal Chowk but police deployed in full strength foiled the march by charging batons on them and arresting over 200 of them. The employees were marching to Rajbhwana to present a memorandum to Governor, NN Vorha seeking his intervention for implementation of the agreement with state government signed with them last year. Police and para-military Central Reserve Police Force was deployed in full strength to thwart the march and prevent them from reaching to Rajbhawan. The employees Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) senior leader and president of the Employees Joint Action Committee (R), Ram Kumar Sharma, announced this afternoon that strike will continue for 4 more days beginning from Monday. Kumar said that the decision was taken after State government instead of fulfilling the demand of the employees' resorted to repressive measures by arresting over 60 government employees. Kumar said that repressive tactics of the State government aggravated the situation. He said that by these tactics government forced employees to intensify their agitation by extending it by 4 more days. He said that the backing out of the agreement which they reached with the employees is total failure on part of government. He said that government's repressive measures against the employees and dis honouring of the agreement puts a question mark on the credibility of the government. Kumar, however, said that employees can call off strike now if the government implements the agreement which it reached with the state government employees last year. The employees are demanding regularisation of daily wagers, contractualsn and adhoc employees, removal of pay anomaly and increase in the retirement age from present 58 years to 60 years. Over 60 State government employees, mostly their leaders, were arrested during past three days. Over a dozen of the JCC leaders were arrested by police during mid night raids on Wednesday night on their residences. And over 50 of them courted arrested yesterday at the main entrance of the Civil Secretariat, Srinagar. The prominent among those who courted arrest yesterday are Syeda Ladakhi, Purshotam Sharma, Balwant Singh, Shabir Ahmad, Javed Ahmad Akhoon, Ghulam Mohammad Hamdard, Ghulam Mohammad Bandro, Naseer Ahmad Wani, Khurshid Ahmad Dewani, Abdul Rashid and Mir Waseem. And those who were arrested in mid night raids a day before the 3 day strike that began on Thursday included Abdul Qayoom Wani, Mohammad Khurshid Aalam, Mohidin Muntazir, Khursheed Ahmad Bhat, Farooq Trali, Khalid Mehmood, Abdul Qayoom Beigh, Haji Bashir Ahmad Bhat, and Abdul Qayoom Beigh. In the meantime as the Employees continued to stay away from work for the third day today government offices remained deserted. However, work in the Civil Secretariat was going on normally. All government offices, including the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CA&PD) ration depots and headquarter also remained closed. The government educational institutions also wore a deserted look as students and teaching staff stayed away. However, private schools across the State were functioning normally. Like in other parts of the state, employees under the banner of Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) also held a protest demonstration at Kishtwar under the supervision of Syed Zakir Hussan. The agitating employees in the form of rally reached at DC office Kishtwar and raised anti government slogans and slogans in support of their demands. Later the leaders of JCC called on Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar Saleem Mohammad and submitted a charter of demand to him. Due to employees strike, the work in many government departments including educational institutes' remains effected. |
