| ATR on Sachar report likely in Budget Session | | | NEW DELHI, JAN 30 The Centre is expected to come out with its action-taken report (ATR) on the findings of the Rajinder Sachar committee on Muslims in the budget session of Parliament.
A source close to Union Minority Affairs Minister A R Antulay, who has already announced that the Sachar report will be implemented in toto, said inter-ministerial discussions have begun over the upcoming ATR.
"It (ATR) is likely to be presented in the budget session of Parliament," the source said.
Tabled in Parliament in November last year, the Sachar report has favoured reservations for the most backward in the Muslim community, creation of an equal opportunity commission (EOC) and a nomination procedure for political involvement of Muslims at the grassroot.
The committee, which went into the social, economic and educational status of the Muslims, has come out with a series of findings, including the point that the percentage of Muslims in government employment was a mere 4.9 per cent of the total 88,44,669 employees, indicating that all was not well for the 150 million population in the country.
The 404-page report has drawn flak from the main Opposition BJP, which has rejected it as an attempt to impress Muslim voters ahead of elections in several states, including key Uttar Pradesh.
Set by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in March 2005, the Sachar committee has favoured reservation for a group of Muslims with traditional occupations as that of Scheduled Castes. |
