Congress says it has no comment to make | Interlocutors' Report | | RUSTAM JAMMU, May 27: It may appear unbelievable and ridiculous but it is a stark reality that the Jammu & Kashmir Congress has refused to comment on what the interlocutors' report has said about Jammu & Ladakh. Almost all the political parties operating in the State have reacted, mostly against the report. The NC has expressed its view and said only such a solution will be workable that is acceptable to it. The CPI-M has given its reaction. The BJP and the JKNPP have expressed their views. The outfits of the internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus and outfits like the Shiv Sena and Jammu State Morcha have expressed their views. The Samajwadi Party has expressed its views. The Kashmiri separatists like Syed Ali Shah Geelani have also expressed their views. The Jammu and Kashmir Congress perhaps is the only formation which has thought it prudent not to say anything in favour of or against the interlocutors' report. So much so, it has refused to react even to the interlocutors' recommendation that three Regional Councils invested with "certain" legislative, financial and administrative powers should be established for the State's three provinces, Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. When asked for his reaction to the interlocutors' suggestion regarding the creation of Regional Councils in the State, State Congress spokesperson Ravinder Sharma, a votary of ST status to the so-called Paharis, said that he was "not in a position to comment", as he was yet to "go through the report". He should have appreciated the suggestion, even if vague, considering the fact that the 2008 Congress election manifesto for Jammu and Kashmir had held out a solemn commitment that the "Congress, if voted to power, will amend the State Constitution in order to federalize the State polity and establish Regional Councils" for Jammu and Ladakh. The question was straight and the answer should have been straight and simple that the Congress welcomes the suggestion. That he chose otherwise and reportedly refused to comment did indicate that the Congress was not committed to what it pledged to garner votes in Jammu province in 2008 and even earlier. It may be recalled that the 2002 Congress election manifesto for Jammu and Kashmir had promised a regional development board for Jammu. It is strange that while the NC, which is sharing power with the Congress in the State and at the Centre and leading the State Government, was very vocal on the issue, the spineless Congress remained mum, thus establishing once again that the Congress has no role to play in the State and that its only role is dance to the Kashmiri tunes and help the Kashmiri leadership to jeopardize the legitimate interests of the people of Jammu and Ladakh. It is this attitude that is rendering the Congress irrelevant with each passing day. It is advantage the BJP and the JKNPP provided they are willing to exploit the Congress's double-speak and its politics of deceit. By telling the people of Jammu that the Congress, like the NC, is essentially a Kashmir-centric party, they can capture the Congress's political space. Let's see what the BJP and the JKNPP do to expose the Congress party and its "dubious" role in the State politics.
