JUET: A saga of extravagance, intellect bankruptcy
Registrar unhappy with deployment of officers as observers

early times report
Jammu, May 27: The Jammu University Entrance Test (JUET) which kick-started last year with much fanfare by the then Vice Chancellor Prof. Varun Sahni and Dean
Academic Affairs Prof. R D Sharma claiming it to be their biggest achievement, has proved out to be a mega show of extravagance and intellectual bankruptcy. Perhaps, JUET will be the only University entrance examination of the country that is conducted over a period of half a month.
According to highly placed sources, few days ago Registrar Prof.Naresh Padha and Dean Academic Affairs Prof. R D Sharma had a verbal spat vis-à-vis arrangements of JUET. Prof. Padha was unhappy with the deployment of University officers as observers of the entrance examination. He was of the view "if all will go on observer duty than who will run the show in University." Sources disclosed that DAA wanted services of PP Singh for the entrance duty but Registrar plainly refused. It is pertinent to mention here that majority of the University officers have been made observers. Last year, the expenditure of conducting the entrance was several lakh rupees.
Sources said that all out-station observers will camp at their respective places for entire 15 days. There is no need to have observers but JU send them just to enjoy the trip. It's an excellent opportunity to have vacation at places like Ladakh, Srinagar, Poonch, Rajouri etc. The blue eyed boys, including a much junior official, of nodal officer have been sent to Srinagar on Observer duty. In this way, University is only spending the money unnecessarily which they have collected from the students as fee. The observers being sent are more like Holiday Makers, sources added. Last year also, a Professor and his wife (also serving in University) were sent to Ladakh as observers.Commenting over the conduct of JUET, a senior Professor and Dean said,"Most of the people are dissatisfied with the pattern as it is unnecessarily stretched over the period of 15 days which is unusual. Many of the Universities around us conduct the entrance examination but their process is short and meaningful. On the contrary, JU conducts entrance in a very big manner as if it is an uphill task." When weightage of the entrance marks is just 60 percent for admission than why this exercise is made so gigantic, he added.
"Had it been planned in a comprehensive manner, the extravagance over this exercise could have been prevented. The incumbent Vice Chancellor seriously needs to review this pattern," he remarked. According to a college Principal "The entire part of conduct is
managed by the college staff. Everything goes off in a smooth manner. Under such condition, observers are not required at all. This is surprising that University has deployed junior officials as observers over the College teachers."
