Early Times Report
Jammu, May 27 : The political bickering within state unit of BJP , its sister organizations and the expelled faction of 7 MLAs has not yet ended and it gets ever louder as and when any dignitary from the party high command arrives in the state. Over one year on, when almost the storm that stirred political circles and BJP in particular over the cross voting during MLC elections , a senior leader of BJYM, youth wing of party has once again raked up the issue, questioning the silence of powers that be within the party over what he hints at 'dubious' role of MLA Ashok Khajuria and Jugal Kishore in the cross voting episode.
The issue has been raked up to the hilt, this time bringing to the fore some past instances when the role of Ashok Khajuria was seen with doubt , in terms of extending support to the party and following party whip. The issue of cross voting, certain dimensions related to it which still remain unanswered and mainly the point that has been loudly contested by the BJYM leader who parted ways with the parent body today, remains that why and on what basis the high command has pointed fingers towards the 7 MLAs, mainly the stalwart Prof Chaman Lal Gupta who has devoted entire life in nourishing the party.
BJYM State Executive Member and District Vice-President Udhampur, Advocate Sunny Mahajan and District BJYM Office Secretary Sourabh Pachiala along with a large number of youth activists resigned from the primary membership of the party and the main reason they attributed to this step is to lodge protest against the expulsion of 7 MLAs including former Union Minister Prof Chaman Lal Gupta and what they see as 'dictatorial' attitude of the present self-styled State BJP leadership. Whether the party suffered another big jolt as contended by those who parted ways or not is a separate question. But in Udhampur, Mahajan is considered to be the most popular Youth face of the BJP .
What remains the serious dimensions of today's development is the timing of these supporters of the party and the youth leader to call it a day, as Raj Nath Sing led study group is arriving in state tomorrow. What, however, remains even more serious dimension is the brazen way the youth leader has dared to raise the questions related to cross voting and bold allegations , while digging some past instances. While addressing a press conference in Udhampur, Sunny Mahajan said that expulsion of Prof Gupta along with other 6 MLAs is a part of well-planned conspiracy. He also referred to 2003 MLC elections, when the then only BJP MLA, had allegedly voted in favour of the NC candidate. He further alleged that again in the 2010 Rajya Sabha elections, two BJP MLAs including Ashok Khajuria and Jugal Kishore openly voted in favour of NC candidate Dr Farooq Abdullah on the directions of a senior BJP leader of New Delhi.
"It is quite strange that those MLAs who have the history of being involved in cross-voting were given clean chit by the party high command without any inquiry being done and leaders like Prof Chaman Lal Gupta who nurtured the party with full dedication throughout his life was made a scapegoat in this whole well-planned cross-voting scandal…..", Mahajan has observed contending if there was any single piece of evidence lying with the party high command on the basis of which it can be said that which MLA voted for which candidate, it should come out with that evidence in public so that the general public may also be able to know the truth. He asked what was the need of fielding the candidate for the MLC elections when it was fully known to the party high command that the party doesn't have the required number of MLAs for ensuring the victory of its candidate nor there was any alliance with any other party like the Panthers Party allied with the PDP and withdrew their candidate in support of the PDP candidate.
In what could be seen as his open support to Prof Chaman Lal Gupta led faction, Mahajan further said that by expelling such a cadre-based leader like Prof Gupta, BJP State leadership has proved that it has lost its ideology and some anti-national elements are presently running the party in their own selfish ways. Opening one chapter of past, Mahajan disclosed that the party high command has been trying to de-moralise the mass based leaders earlier also which he tried to substantiate with the instance when in the year 2001, a Bill was moved in the J&k Assembly seeking freezing of delimitation in J&k till 2026, the then BJP high command had issued directions to the then all 8 MLAs to vote in favour of this anti-Jammu bill which was strongly opposed by the then Leader of Opposition Lala Shiv Charan Gupta. When it came to voting, 7 MLAs including Ashok khajuria voted in favour of this anti-Jammu Bill but Lala Ji opposed this Bill tooth and nail and didn't vote in favour of the said Bill, as a result of which the party high command removed Lala Ji from the post of Leader of opposition and Ashok Khajuria was appointed as the leader of opposition when there was only 1 day left in the Assembly session.
The BJYM leader has not stopped here. He has gone a step further by taking on and hitting hard against some of the senior party leaders including State BJP Chief of giving undue importance to anti-party elements, alleging their role has always remained dubious and instead of supporting the party in times of need, they have done more damage than any good to the party, its candidates in election fray from time to time.
