Sham inaugurates Food Safety & Standards training prog

SRINAGAR, May 28: Minister for Health, Sham Lal Sharma inaugurated a 3-day training programme (May 28-30) for the Designated Officers and Adjudicating Officers (Additional Deputy Commissioners) to ensure strict implementation of Food Safety and Standards Act in Jammu and Kashmir at the Institute of Hotel Management at Raj Bagh, here today.
The training programme has been organized by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in collaboration with the State Food Safety Organization with an objective of organizing the training programme is to hone the skill of all the functionaries responsible for implementation of Food Safety and Standards Act and to ensure quality food articles in the State.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that making laws is not the solution, but their proper implementation on the ground is the big challenge. He stressed the need for launching a massive awareness campaign to educate the general masses at different levels about the food safety and preventive measures about various diseases due to our day to day eating habits. He emphasized the need for coordinated efforts with the active involvement of various organizations, like educational institutions, health department, NGOs, Panchayat institutions, media and other stake holders to change the mindset of people and to generate awareness about the safe food for human consumption in the state.
Describing adulteration as the biggest crime; the Minister said that all those indulging in the adulteration and selling sub-standard food articles need to be punished strictly so that a message was spread in the society about this heinous crime. He said quality food is the fundamental right of every citizen and all out efforts will be made to ensure it. He asked the Designated Authorities to work with missionary approach to deal with this human issue.
MoS for Health Javed Dar asked the participants to enforce the new Food Safety Act in letter and spirit to ensure good quality food articles to the people. State Food Safety Commissioner, Satish Gupta gave resume of the overall scenario in the State and initiatives taken by the Organization to deal with the situation. He said the training will help all the functionaries to update their knowledge and discharging their duties efficiently and assured that the existing laws will be enforced in letter and spirit and all out efforts will be made to provide safe food articles to the people of the State. Deputy Commissioners Food Safety, Kashmir, Jammu, Nazir Ahmed, Ms Lotika Khajuria, Project Director, J&K AIDS Control Society, Rakesh Khajuria, Director Horticulture (Planning & Marketing), M S Sood, Food Safety Officers of all the districts of the State, health officers, SMC/JMC and other functionaries associated with the Food Safety in the State were present on the occasion.
