VHP schedule on Amarnath yatra has placed Govt. in deep predicament
5/30/2012 12:03:16 AM
Early Times Report
Jammu, May 29: Will the National Conference led Government provide the
much needed security cover to the activists of the VHP and the saffron
brigade, besides groups of Sadhus, planning to proceed to the holy cave of Amarnath, situated in south Kashmir, from June 3, about 22 days ahead from the schedule fixed by the Government and the Shrine Board ?
Has the Government any plan to resort to arrests of those activists and Sadhus who try to violate the Government fixed schedule of the annual yatra? Or in an alternative to reduce
confrontation with Hindu groups, will the Government ferry a group of VHP activists to the Cave shrine, considered to be the abode of Lord Shiva and his consort,
Parvati on June 3 and then prevent any other group from proceeding to the shrine?
These questions have assumed utmost significance following the announcement made by the VHP on its schedule for commencing the yatra from June 3. Importance is also attached to the VHP fixed schedule, that violates the schedule fixed by the Government because of the country-wide religious sentiments attached with the annual yatra.
Inside reports said that the ruling coalition has decided to leave the issue of dealing with the sensitive matter to the Union Home Ministry. Whatever suggestion the Union Home Ministry gives the State Government will implement the same promptly.
Though the VHP and leaders of other organizations had announced about a month ago that their activists and groups of Sadhus will start the yatra from first week of June as they wanted atleast 60-day yatra duration to allow several lakhs of pilgrims to make it to the mountain shrine, the Tuesday announcement of the schedule has caused a flutter in the Government circles. According to the latest announcement the BJP leader Uma Bharati will lead Vishwa Hindu Parishad-sponsored parallel Amarnath pilgrimage on June 3 from Jammu.
"Uma Bharati will reach Jammu on June 2 and next morning after performing prayers, she will lead thousands of yatris proceeding for Amarnath shrine," Surinder Jain, VHP international spokesperson has said. Dr Jain said Ms Bharati will be accompanied by Mahant Rameshwar Dass and Ram Swaroop Dass during the yatra.
"Thousands of sadhus, mahants and activists of VHP will assemble at Jammu base camp to proceed for Baltal on June 3," he added and said the yatra will leave for Baltal on June 3 at any cost.
Dr Jain warned if Government tried to stop yatra or arrest the yatris they will sit on dharna at the same place where the authorities try to stop them. "VHP will launch such a Jail Baro Andolan that the jails will fall short to accommodate the Satyagharis, he added.
He also revealed that recently Jagat Guru Shankaracharya Vasudeva Ji said that the yatra will run for two months completely this time and from next year it should run for the entire year. He warned that in case the Government creates hurdles in the way of yatra, he will next year himself lead the yatra.
"Weather is a lame excuse it was decided in last October that the yatra will be started on June 25'', he added. He accused the Government and Board of betraying the yatris last time on the duration of pilgrimage after backtracking from the prominent but it will not be allowed this time.
Political pundits suggest two alternatives to the Government. First the Government should, if the yatris remain adamant on their programme, ferry a group of VHP activists, including Uma Bharti, through choppers to Baltal and Pahalgam to show them the ground realities i.e. the Yatra route is buried under deep snow.
Secondly, the Government should cooperate with the VHP leaders by allowing only one batch to proceed to the cave under tight security which would satiate their ego.
These two alternatives the Government could try if the two routes to the cave are still impassable. If one of the two routes are passable the Government needs to avoid sitting on ego which may destabilise peace.
