Policemen among a score injured as labourers clash on Jmu-Sgr NH | | | early times report Jammu, May 30: Atleast a score person including policemen got injured when security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse the protesting labourers who blocked the ever busy Jammu-Srinagar National Highway 1A near Chenani Udhampur in protest against Leighton Welspun Contractors for disengaging two labouers. The workers union took up the case with the authorities for their re-engagement of disengaged labourers but the company refused to do so which sparked the protest from the former, sources added. Sources said amid slogans, hundreds of labouers this afternoon, assembled on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and blocked the road for about six hours demanding re-engaging of shunted two labouers by the company on Tuesday night. "Agitated protestors burnt tyres and disrupted the vehicular movement on the highway, which remained blocked for hours," sources from Udhampur said. Meanwhile police resorted to mild-lathicharge to disperse the agitators, which led to scuffle followed by stone pelting by the angered labouers. In a ding-dong battle, 20 persons including labourers, policemen and CRPF personnel sustained injuries and they were admitted in the district hospital," police sources from Udhampur said. They added police besides tear gas shells and cane charge also opened few rounds in air to disperse the protesting labourers. A case has been registered at Chenani Police Station and the matter is being investigated,'' a police official added. Pertinent to mention that Private player Leighton Welspun Contractors started work on the first section of the Rs 3,720 crore nine-km Chenani Nashri Tunnel on NH -1A in Jammu and Kashmir last year.
