Srinagar hit and run attack raises serious questions | | | early times report Srinagar, May 30: The daredevil hit and run attack in downtown city today has jolted all peace loving people of the state and it must also have opened the eyes of those who hold that militancy is over in the city and therefore all the security force bunkers and makeshift barracks must be removed. Two motorcycle borne assailants fired at a posse of the CRPF in broad daylight injuring seven of them just a stone's throw away from their makeshift headquarters in the city. IGP Kashmir Zone, S.M. Sahai has said although the level of militancy have substantially come down, militancy is still far from over in the city. He also said the hit and run attack in the Rainawari area was carried out by gunmen who had entered the city from the rural areas. The state police force has been maintaining that there are no militants in Srinagar city and whenever hit and run attacks against the security forces occur these are the handiwork of militants who sneak into the city for the specific purpose of carrying out such attacks. The fact that two motorcycle borne militants managed to carry out the attack in the heart of the capital city injuring seven CRPF jawans, one of them critically, has jolted those who want the present summer peace to continue. It must also have been noticed by the law and order maintenance machinery that the strike call given by Syed Ali Shah Geelani had very little response in Srinagar till the Rainawari attack occurred. Public transport had started moving normally in the city and people had also started moving out on their routine work ignoring the strike call given by Geelani. As the news of the Rainawari attack spread in the city life came to an abrupt halt at most of the places. The efficacy of separatist shutdowns and protest calls has somehow come to be in direct proportion to the capacity of the militants to carry out their subversive plans. The Valley has seen two peaceful summers so far and everybody who has a stake in peace looks forward to the consolidation of this peace. Yet, nobody can deny the hard fact that peace is always a fragile reality in the strife torn Valley. Any small incident like a grenade explosion or a hit and run attack is enough to reverse the lovers of peace. Those who seem to be in hurry to remove the so-called footprints of the security forces from Srinagar city must rethink on their rhetoric. It has been because of the huge sacrifices by the state police and the paramilitary forces that Srinagar has come to the present state of peace and tranquility. Any hasty attempt to prove a political point is sure to derail not only the present peace, but also the entire calculations of the business community who have been earning a respectable livelihood because of the prevailing peace. Anything that encourages the mischief mongers and anti-social elements needs to be put down with firmness and authority. The tendency to experiment with peace has proved costly in the past and will not be prudent in the future.
