Jammu Bandh evokes good response, passes off peacefully | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 31: As the mercury touched 45.70C in Jammu, the Jammuites outcry against the price hike also echoed in the similar pitch and spirits as witnessed in the other parts of nation in response to nationwide bandh call called NDA-Left parties. During the peaceful bandh the normal life was thrown completely out of gear with scanty private vehicular traffic visible on the roads. The tourist markets in Jammu also remained closed posing hardships to visiting pilgrims. Majority of busy city markets wore a deserted look and business centres observed complete shut down in support of the bandh call against the steepest petrol price rise. The state government offices reported thin attendance while educational institutions remained closed. The reports coming from areas in and around Jammu claimed that near total bandh was observed in Akhnoor, Samba, Kathua, RS Pura, Bishanah, Udhampur and other places in Jammu province. The call given by NDA was wrapped up by other opposition parties to show solidarity with the aam admi. Series of protest rallies and street demonstrations were organsied by supporters of various political groups to send across a tough message. The BJP, led by Rajya Sabha MP, J P Nadda, and Avinash Rai Khanna took out a protest march in the city against the hike in fuel prices raising slogans against the Congress-led UPA government. Earlier, BJP state president Shamsher Singh Manhas carried out a protest rally in the city riding on a horse-cart. Manhas said if the fuel prices continued to increase like this, the day is not far when people will have to depend upon cycles and other traditional modes for conveyance. Meanwhile Rajya Sabha MP, J P Nadda alleged that the Congress-led UPA was working in an anti-democratic fashion and had no respect for the institutions of this country. "It is very sad that the Parliament is being insulted. The budget session of 2012 is sine-die on May 22 and on the evening of May 23, this anti democratic government led by UPA raises the prices of petrol, knowing that people are already reeling under the serious inflation," Nadda pointed. Meanwhile, CPI (M) activists also registered a protest against the hike in fuel prices and alleged that in last three years UPA government has raised the petrol prices for a record 18 times. They also said that that around 48 per cent tax was imposed on fuel. Nearly about 500 JKDF workers including its Senior Leaders and women cadre today gathered at Dogra Chowk to sit on hunger strike in front of Pt Prem Nath Dogra's statue to protest the Central Government's recent decision of petrol price hike and pressurized it to roll back the same. While addressing to gathering Anil Gupta Chairman JKDF said, "UPA Government is bent upon to add to the miseries of poor people who are already reeling under the burden of high inflation rate." "We strongly condemn the steep increase in the price of petrol by Rs.7.54 per litre. This is a savage attack on the people already suffering from the effects of continuous price rise of all essential commodities," Slamming State and Central Government over price hike row Surinder Sharma Sr Core Committee Member JKDF said that the recent hike petrol shall further aggravate the problems of this State where people are already bearing the brunt of hike in electricity and water charges. A large number of JKDF workers sat on one day hunger strike Yet in a similar protest Socialists Democratic Party (SDP) activists protests on roads against the petrol price hike and took out protest rallies at all district headquarters and road marches at Talab Tillo & Bari Brahamna SDP General Secretary Ajay Kumar, Sham Lal Bhagat and Balvinder Singh raised slogans against the central government for the hike in petrol prices and exhibited banners and placards displaying the party's rejection of the decision terming the hike as anti-people. Meanwhile Kranti Dal after staging a protest against petrol price hike visited different parts of whole jammu city and thanks the people of jammu for supporting bharat bandh without any pressure. A delegation of Kranti Dal leaders led by State Gen. Secy Pritam Sharma, City President Rajinder Bhagat and youth leader Jagdish Sudan and other units of Kranti Dal visited city and around to express thanks to the Jammuites to support Jammu Bandh. Shiv Sena and Dogra Front activists led by Ashok Gupta staged a protest and even burnt a scooter to register resentment against ever rising price of petrol for the last two years and urged for an immediate roll-back of the prices. The bandh also had its effect of the other districts of the region with BJP protestors burning the effigy of UPA government in Kathua, however, the traffic movement on the national highway remained unaffected. |
