Omar should learn lessons from follies of Sheikh
6/1/2012 9:02:51 AM

Early Times Report
Jammu, May 31: Chief minister Omar Abdullah, who holds his grand father the late chief minister Sheikh Abdullah, has taken the cue of holding cabinet meetings at far off and remote places.
It was because of his thinking that he decided to hold cabinet meeting at Karnah, 108-km from Srinagar, at the cost exchequer, but he missed the important points.
During Sheikh's tenure, the late chief minister would hold meetings of district and development boards of each district in the remote corner of the respective district. And would only take cabinet ministers along him.
The cabinet didn't take any decision in these meeting but would be approached by locals.
The cabinet meetings would be only held in either Jammu and Srinagar.
The CM himself has been holding DDB meetings in each district. These are being attended by cabinet minister.
By this logic, Omar himself is defying his own logic.
Omar, who has kept the pic of his grand father at many places in his residence, had many things to learn from the mistakes and follies of his grand father rather than following him blindly.
He was reminded last year by not less than PCC chief Prof Saif ud-din Soz to read the book Aatish-e-chinar written by his grandfather rather than start debate about accession to India.
Omar should also keep in mind that the regional politics played by Sheikh Abdullah had widened the gap between Jammu and Srinagar, which had turned explosive, a pointed noted in the report of interlocutors.
Sheikh only cared for Kashmir valley and tried to woo a section of people in Doda and Poonch.
This resulted in resentment in Jammu and sowed the seeds of communalism in Doda, Poonch and Rajouri districts, for which people continue to suffer even now.
It was in line with this ideology Mughal Road and Smithan pass was formulated. Though it was blocked by the then Cong government in the Centre.
Sheikh had to face the Praja Parishad agitation and then Ayurveda college agitation and many more, which lowered his stature.
Realizing from the follies and mistakes of Sheikh, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is actively cultivating Jammu and getting response also. The tide is slowly tilting in his favour.
Omar must relaise this sooner than latter, if he has political ambition, to correct his thinking of blindly following his grand father.
