Early Times Report
Srinagar, June 2 : With Kashmir witnessing nearly 4.5 lakh tourist arrivals in the first five months of this year, a hoteliers association has asked the Government to expand the Valley's tourist infrastructure. "There is an urgent need to expand the tourist infrastructure to accommodate heavy rush of tourists to the Valley," representatives of Association of Jammu and Kashmir Hoteliers Club said at a meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand here. The meeting was convened yesterday to discuss several issues connected with the development of Srinagar city and infrastructural facilities for the tourists across the Valley, an official spokesman said today. The Valley has been witnessing a huge tourist rush with hotels and tourist resorts fully booked. The spokesman said the association requested the Deputy Chief Minister to acquire land in the peripheral areas for establishing new hotels and hutments for the tourists. The association also underlined the need to reconsider tourist village from Cheshmashahi to Brein along the banks of Dal Lake for creating tourist infrastructure. They also asked for allowing a facelift and other necessary repairs to the structures around the Dal area to restore its beauty, the spokesman said. Chand assured the members that the government would take into consideration their demands and address them in a phased manner.
Referring to the development of Dal Lake, the Deputy Chief Minister said work on Rs 356-crore Dal cleaning project is in full swing and dredging machines have been put in service round the clock. He said the Government had started the process of shifting Dal area dwellers in the new identified colonies as per the rehabilitation policy. Chand also said the Government was committed to the beautification of Srinagar city and all further construction activities would be undertaken strictly as per the Master Plan in view of the future requirements.
