Kissan Union demands relief package for drought hit areas | | | Early Times Report SUNDERBANI, June 3: All J&K Kissan Union (AJKKU) has demanded Rs 500 crore relief package for drought hit 40 lakh farmers of Jammu region beside issuance of Kissan Credit Card and Pass books before November and make entry regarding crop loss in Rabi . Chairman and former legislator Ashok Sharma, while addressing a largely attended dharna at Sunderbani (Rajouri) organized by farmers in support of their demands pleaded for formulating a comprehensive farm policy for the State, so that the losses caused to standing crops, orchards and live stock due to drought, excessive rains, floods, hail storm and various diseases could be offset by providing them full compensation for such losses. He stressed that for the purpose, all the crop and cattle be insured on government expenses. Referring to long dry spell that prevailed in Jammu province during last two months and not timely releasing water in irrigation canals followed by untimely rains, winds and hail storm, the former legislator demanded a special package of Rs 500 crore to compensate the farmers whose Rabi crops got damaged due to these factors. Besides providing six months free ration, and power supply, all the effected farmers in Jammu region be given free seeds, fertilizers and other agriculture inputs for the Kharief, he emphasized. He also pleaded for strengthening of local-self government by incorporating 73rd and 74th constitutional amendments in J&K Constitution. Meanwhile, Kissan Union staged dharna in support of their demands at Vijaypur, Bishnah, Samba, Kalakote, Ramgarh and Rajouri. |
