| 16 rebels expelled from Cong in Punjab | | |
CHANDIGARH, JAN 31 Punjab Congress today expelled 16 partymen, including five former legislators, from the primary membership of the party for contesting against official nominees.
"The 16 partymen defied the party discipline and preferred to contest the ensuing polls against official nominees. They are expelled from the primary membership of the party for a period of six years. No notice is issued to these partymen," Punjab Congress Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC) president Gopal Krishan Chatrath told a press conference here.
A decision to this effect was taken at the instance of Punjab Congress chief Shamsher Singh Dullo, Chatrath said.
He said the presidents of District Congress Committees had been directed to submit report to the DAC on a day-to-day basis on Congressmen indulging in anti-party activities.
Chatrath said there were around 2-3 Congressmen in each constituency working against party's official nominees. "These people are issued notices and their replies are sought on their indulgence in anti-party activities," he added.
The 5 former legislators expelled include Ramesh Singla (Nabha), Manjit Singh Jalbhutti (Mansa), Babu Ram Chawla (Balluana), Gulzar Singh (Nathana) and Baldev Singh Balamgarh (Malout).
Yesterday, the party had expelled eight rebels, including former MLA Bhag Singh (Chamkaur Sahib).
The total number of partymen expelled from the Congress since the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers on January 29 stood at 24.
Chatrath said the "party will show the people the false propaganda launched by the Shirmonai Akali Dal (SAD) chief Parkash Singh Badal that the SAD-BJP combine would return to power."
"The Congress has done so much in its five year rule in Punjab that it will get maximum support from the people of the state," he claimed adding that the party would "break the back of the Akalis even in their strongholds".
Chatrath admitted that the party could not succeed in its goal to achieve 100 per cent literacy in the state.
"We have taken steps in this direction and if given another opportunity to rule the state, the aim will be achieved by year 2010," he said.
He said the Amarinder Singh government had also implemented the fifth Pay commission for its employees. "Around five lakh employees are benefited by this decision," he added.
