Does Rajnath know what he says?
Kashmiriyat & BJP
6/4/2012 12:07:42 AM
RUSTAM
JAMMU, Jun 3: It's radical change in the attitude of the BJP towards Kashmir. Radical to the extent that it has started hailing "Kashmiriyat" like the Kashmiri secessionists, Kashmiri "mainstream" leaders, Kashmiri commentators, Delhi-based commentators, "intellectuals", ""trouble-shooters", "conflict-managers" and track-II actors and those ruling the country have been doing, particularly since 1975, when the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi handed over the state power to the protagonist of plebiscite and a votary of three-nation theory Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah on a platter. It was in 1975 or immediately thereafter that one Jammu-based Kashmir expert coined the term "Kashmiriyat" to mislead the Indian and international opinion by telling them that Kashmir meant nothing but a land of peace, peaceful co-existence of different communities, tolerance, accommodation and respect for all, irrespective of their religious beliefs.
Go through the pre-1975 Kashmir's literature and you will find that none ever used the term "Kashmiriyat". Those who wrote on Kashmir, Kashmir's history and the anti-India struggle in Kashmir used to emphasise that Kashmir had a distinct identity that needed to be protected and promoted through a separate instrument. Those who coined the term "Kashmiriyat" for reasons best known to them conveniently overlooked the fact that Kashmir which was once a hundred per cent Hindu had by then become over 90 per cent non-Hindu and that it was the followers of one particular religious sect who had been reigning supreme, dominating not only the Kashmir's politics but also the state's polity and economy and rigorously excluding all others. There is no need to elucidate further this point, as the victims of what happened to the religious and ethnic minorities in Kashmir can be seen everywhere in the country. They had left Kashmir before 1975 and they quit Kashmir in 1990 on a permanent basis, as they felt that it was impossible for them to protect their religion, culture and dignity. They could have stayed put had they agreed to join the hate and break-India crusade launched by the bigots who hated all, barring the followers of a one particular religious sect. The rest is history.
Senior BJP leader and chairman of the BJP Parliamentary Study Group Rajnath Singh yesterday did exactly what the champions of "Kashmiryat" had been doing since 1975 while talking to media persons in Srinagar. He did say that "Kashmir is an integral part of India", but, at the same time, he asserted that "Kashmiryat as an identity also holds importance", that the "significance of 'Kashmiriyat', along with the resolution of the J&K issue", could not be ignored and that the "beauty of Kashmiriyat will not be allowed to lose its sheen". It is shocking.
From what Rajnath Singh said it was more than evident that the BJP has made up its mind to devise or go in for a solution to the so-called Kashmir problem that suits the ardent believers in the concept of "Kashmiriyat". It became also clear that the local BJP "intellectuals" who have been assisting the BJP Parliamentary Study Group in the preparation of the so-called vision document have succeeded in influencing the opinion of Rajnath Singh and his other colleagues. Rajnath Singh did not talk of the Dogriyat and Ladakhiyat, which have suffered on an unprecedented scale during all these 65 years of the state's accession to India, only indicated the BJP's perverted thinking.
Are the people of Jammu and Ladakh, who have suffered immensely during all these years at the hands of New Delhi, the so-called national parties like the Congress and the BJP and the New Delhi-backed Kashmiri leadership of all hues, taking cognizance of what the likes of Rajnath Singh have been doing to further queer the Indian pitch in Kashmir and jeopardize their interests? If not, they must. They must come forward and do all that they could to prevent the BJP from playing the mischief.
