PYC polls in J&K a farce…. a pre fixed match…..? | | | early times report Jammu, Jun 3: The recently concluded Pradesh Youth Congress elections in the state may have been projected by the authorities and leadership as ' fair and transparent' as far as process is concerned but neither the procedure and conduct of the polls was a 'fair game' nor were the results as outcome of a democratically held exercise aimed at strengthening inner party democracy. On a broader scale, the PYC polls too turned out to be a one up man ship between the two rivals Prof Saif-u-Din Soz and Ghulam Nabi Azad. The polls have seen Azad - sponsored candidate, Shahnawaz Choudhary ultimately hitting the PYC - President bull leaving behind Soz's trusted henchman, INTUC Chief's nephew with a wafer-thin margin. But , according to sources the entire exercise ordered at the instance of national youth icon, herein J&K was a pre-fixed match. The organizational elections were throughout marred with brazen display of money, muscle power, biasness of election teams and worst inter meddling by ministers, senior party functionaries in Rahul Gandhi's novel concept of numbers-game regarding conduction of elections in J & K, sources said. Sources further said some sitting ministers and legislators and senior party functionaries conveyed complaints in the office of Rahul Gandhi regarding what is being widely seen as 'faulty working of election staff ' in J & K. But nothing happened nor was any action seen at any level. A look deep into the whole procedure shows out of 90,000 membership forms, only 5,000 delegates were enrolled. Thousands of membership forms went missing. Neither they were in the 'reject list' nor were they in the eligible list of members, sources said. Even the voters outside the polling station revealed that none of the voters knew whom they are going to vote for,in terms of knowing the name of their candidate, what are their credentials. "They were simply asked to remember the symbol ", said a senior leader of the party. From complaints galore and the scenes seen on and before polling, a simple question that emerges that were the organizational elections meant to be seen as fake, pre fixed as these were actually reduced to cock-fights between senior party leaders. One wonders what sort of internal democracy is this exercise going to infuse among the party cadres? For there were flagrant violations of 'Code Of Conduct' regarding spending more than 'specified' limits, giving ads on electronic and print media and allowing criminals to participate in elections came to the fore. Code of Conduct clearly fixed upper expenditure limit for State Committee candidate as Rs. 60,000.00. Since the setting into motion of election process, Shahnawaz Choudhary had been selling the gospel that he enjoys full patronage of Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. Similarly, another State Committee candidate, Pranab Shagotra had been selling the name of PCC President. This apart, ministers and leaders have openly participated in election process and indulged in a sit-in outside the polling stations throughout the day and pressurized the voters. The negative impact of this whole exercise is that the grassroots level cadres of Youth Congress in J & K are feeling a bit duped and pushed towards the wall in this brazen bull-fight of leaders and leader-sons.
