Army assists local administration in combating 'forest fires'

RAJOURI, June 4: Once again the army has come up to the expectations when the civil administration is facing tough times in combating with the forest fires due to the rise in temperature casing havoc for the nature.
"Army is assisting us in all the possible ways in extinguishing the sudden emerging forest fires in several parts of Rajouri, said some officials of forest department during a special meeting of department organised in Rajouri Dak Bungalow.
This meeting was chaired by Minister of State (MoS) for Forest, Shabir Ahmed Khan while Forest Chief Conservator , Forest Conservator and other officials of Rajouri, Poonch and Reasi Division including all the DFOs took part in this meeting.
The forest officials seemed appreciative for the role of army in combating the unbridled forest fires engulfing a large portion of green pockets of the Rajouri district.
Officials didn't hesitate to recall the active and prompt assistance of the army during man made of natural calamities be it the earthquake of October 8, 2005 or be it the road accidents or the floods in border districts.
During this review meeting, the department discussed strategies so as to better its functioning in future especially to take on the challenges of forest fire to save the precious fauna and flora of the state in border district of Rajouri .
Besides this special emphasis was laid upon sudden fire breakouts in several ranges and divisions of Rajouri-Poonch-Reasi division which have became a cause of headache for concerned authorities as well as for locals.
During the meeting participants also decided to take immediate steps to control any sudden forest fire break in any forest part. Meantime senior forest officials closely reviewed the issue of shortage of timber wood in the area and instructed departmental officials to pay attention towards this.
Later talking to media persons, at the sidelines of the meeting, the Forest Chief Conservator said that army has supported forest department teams in quite a commendable way and they have played an important role in forest fire extinguishing. He informed forest teams and army jointly have worked hard to control the fire in many parts of this area and presently the fire is reported from only in two units of two sub divisions fire.
MoS Forest, Shabir Ahmed Khan who also seemed to be quite appreciative of his department said that the data and figures tabled in meeting indicated that our rescue teams have done commendable job in controlling forest fire before the things become out of control.
