BJP fails to agitate 'impressively' over curtailment of Amarnath Yatra duration issue | State unit in disarray | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 4: Despite issue of curtailment of annual Amarnath pilgrimage snowballing into a major controversy, BJP state unit has failed to agitate the issue the way they did in the year 2008. Organisational abilities have gone down drastically and the party has failed to become part of the protest demonstrations in the way they did it in the year 2008. They have lost the connection which they had managed to establish with the commoners in Jammu. The party's state unit has few faces brave enough to face the public. The MLC voting fiasco has vertically divided the unit and just because NC does not want to hold assembly elections, BJP's dissidents are having a field day. Otherwise, people have shown them the door and are no more interested in their political issue. On day 1, fairly impressive turnout of pilgrims from outside the state saved the day for BJP. Its leaders were seen roaming around in small groups enjoying the prevailing chaos and confusion. However, Day 2 of the protest exposed the BJP state unit's effectiveness. Presence of scanty worker population raised many question marks and left many others unanswered? The same BJP which rode high on the Amarnath land row and won 11 Assembly seats in 2008 Assembly polls failed to muster a crowd of more than 100 workers. This is happening at a time when its national leaders are coming down to the city to lead the protest demonstrations over the issue of curtailment of Yatra. Ironically, when the BJP MP Tarun Vijay was desperately trying his best to provoke a reaction and motivate the party cadre, right in front of him handful of workers were struggling to block the way of motorists. While Tarun Vijay shouted from the stage, occupied by local MLA's namely Ashok Khajuria, Sham Choudhary, state party chief Shamsher Singh Manhas and national executive member Dr Jeetindra Singh, the poor workers, only a handful of them were mingling with activists of VHP and Bajrang Dal to put up a brave front. A small group of women workers also created a scene of sorts as they resorted to chest beating while attending the mock cremation ceremony. BJP MP's were left stranded on the dais while Bajrang Dal, VHP activists from outside the state stole the show by torching the effigy of Governor N.N.Vohra. For those who closely follow the state BJP unit, turnout of only a handful of BJP workers and local leaders was not surprising at all. In the last one year the party seems to have lost touch and is literally struggling to keep afloat. The image of the party, despite shunting seven of its tainted legislators, has suffered a major hit. The morale of the party workers is at its lowest ebb owing to infighting among the different factions. The popular leaders of the state unit are unhappy as they have been dumped by those who are at the helm. The tainted lot is busy in leg pulling without taking time out for self-introspection. The question now remains whether the left over BJP MLA's would be able to organise fresh campaign to take on the coalition government determined to expose chinks in their armoury by not succumbing to their demands of enhancing the duration of the Yatra period.
