Omar again talks about Amarnath, says God stopping pilgrims | 'Comment likely to lit fire' | | Early Times Report JAMMU, June 4: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has seemingly lit the fire once again by unnecessarily commenting on the annual Amarnath Yatra. On the micro-blogging site Twitter, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has referred to Amarnath pilgrims and said that it is not the state government which is stopping the pilgrims but god. "Actually, right now God is stopping you because there is so much snow on the route that it is not possible to move on the route," he wrote. The comment has come at a time when hundreds of Amarnath pilgrims have reached Jammu and are eager to move towards the cave shrine. Administration in Jammu is facing tough time in controlling the increasing number of pilgrims. Police and intelligence agencies have been put on high alert to avoid any untoward incidence. But today's comment of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is likely to vitiate the atmosphere. He said that those demanding early start of Amarnath Yatra should accept the state government's offer of flying over the Yatra route for first-hand experience of the extent of snow. "I wish the organisers of what is happening in Jammu would take up our offer and fly over the Amaranth route in the state chopper to see extent of snow," he wrote while adding that he was sure that protesters would not accept the offer as they can't face the truth. "But of course they won't because the truth is inconvenient, as is acceptance of the fact that yare dates were set by Sri Sri Ravishanker ji," he tweeted. Omar's tweet has not gone well with the Amarnath pilgrims. They have made up their mind to reach the cave shrine by or before June 10. Stranded Amarnath pilgrims when asked to comment about the Chief Minister's tweet said "He should not interfere in our religious issues. His comment literally sparked fire across the country in the year 2008. It seems neither the state government nor the Chief Minister have learnt any lesson from that episode." He went on to say that situation would worsen if the government does not stop interfering in the internal religious issues of Hindus. Administrative sources who wished not to be quoted said "We have to see how the things shape up in the morning. Though there is no such information about Bandh or anything adverse happening tomorrow but we have to remain on our toes. Police is already on high alert." He did not mince words while saying that politicians worsen the situation by using language which can spark another 2008 type agitation. "They should not comment unnecessarily because you do not know what can cause a major tragedy. Politicians should take caution and ensure that they do not speak over religious issues especially about Amarnath Yatra," asserted the official. On the other hand, VHP, Bajrang Dal, Shiv Sena and several other right-wing groups have been demanding that the government should extend duration of the Yatra to two months starting from June 4, coinciding with the occasion of 'Jayeshth Purnima'. They accuse the government and SASB of deliberately trying to curtail the period of the pilgrimage at the behest of separatist forces". A large number of Amarnath pilgrims, who tried to proceed towards the cave shrine from Jammu ahead of the scheduled date, were held yesterday. Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB), which manages the annual pilgrimage, has fixed June 25 for the start of the yatra, which will conclude on August 2.
