Mehbooba ridicules NC, Cong & BJP | Grievances of Jammu | | NEHA JAMMU, June 5: One may or may not endorse the stand of People's Democratic Party (PDP) on Jammu & Kashmir. One could also question its self-rule doctrine and say that there is no fundamental difference between the greater autonomy concept and the self-rule doctrine. But no one could question what PDP president and Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Mehbooba Mufti yesterday said about National Conference (NC), Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On Monday, she ridiculed all the three formations. She said that "while the NC leadership is busy in spending on lavish life style, the BJP and the Congress too are not associating themselves with the grievances of people even in Jammu region". She also asserted that "people are aware that when the elections approach NC will start raising the autonomy or other misleading slogans, BJP will start playing Jammu card and Congress will raise the issue of providing Chief Minister from Jammu region". Mehbooba Mufti just cannot be questioned for her blistering attack on the NC, the Congress and the BJP or for what she said about these three formations. It is a fact that the NC raises emotive slogans and plays the autonomy card on the eve of and during the election campaign to mislead people and garner votes but does exactly the opposite when it comes to power or for the sake of power. So much so, it doesn't mind sharing power with parties like the Congress and the BJP. Not only this, it doesn't mind the extension of more central laws to the state when in power. Take, for example, the extension of 18 more central laws to the state between 1975 and 1990. These laws were extended when Sheikh Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah were at the helm. Both called themselves votaries of greater autonomy. In fact, Sheikh Abdullah had come back to power in 1975 after renouncing his "ideology" and disbanding his plebiscite front. Similarly, she made a valid point when she said that the BJP and the Congress seek votes in the name of the people of Jammu region but abandon them after the elections. It is a fact that the Congress in 2002 had contested elections in the name of Jammu. It had said the victory of the Congress would mean chief minister from Jammu, appointment of delimitation commission, implementation of Wazir Commission report, establishment of regional development board and end of discrimination with the people of Jammu province. It is also a fact that the Congress had again contested the 2008 assembly elections in the name of Jammu. In fact, it had held out a solemn commitment that it, if voted to power, would establish empowered regional council for Jammu. It had also made several other commitments with the people of Jammu province to win the election. The people of Jammu region did repose faith in the Congress both in 2002 and 2008 but the Congress did nothing whatsoever to fulfill its commitments. On the other hand, the Congress made common cause with the Kashmiri leadership and hit the people of Jammu province below the belt. It has been extending unstinted support to the NC, which is known for its bias against Jammu province.
