Rajouri residents facing acute water crisis | | | Early Times Report
Rajouri , June 6 : An acute paucity of water has added to the woes of residents of Rajouri district in Jammu and Kashmir, even as the mercury continues to rise. Residents have expressed their ire and said that all major sources of water like the rivers, streams and hand pumps had dried up and the provincial authorities failed to take steps to solve their problems. "There is no respite from the water crisis and there is no one to pay heed to our worries. This is a border area and we are unable to get water. The streams and rivers have dried up. We sit for long hours and wait for water but then also we do not get water to drink. We urge the government to provide us with tanks of water to solve the problem of water crisis," said Ejaz Khan, a resident. The residents also blamed the civic authorities over their failure to provide adequate supply of water. The authorities acknowledged that there is shortage of water in the region and assured that some schemes were planned and the locals would benefit from them. "Definitely, during this summer season, all the water sources are drying up. As it is a hilly area, the water supply has been affected. Therefore, I have asked the PHP for a roaster so that we can provide water through tanker services to the areas within this sub division," Said Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Rajinder Singh Khajuria. The villagers were distressed and feared that water shortage may lead to deterioration of their health. Irregular pattern of rains and delay in monsoon has caused serious concern amongst people in several parts of the country. |
