Divided Congress, BJP help NC; PDP to expand bases in Jammu region
6/6/2012 10:42:05 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT

Jammu, June 6: Two main political parties, the BJP and the Congress, in Jammu and Kashmir are yet to come out of their self-inflicted dissensions and factional feuds.
What seems to worry the sangh parivar is the way the BJP had to be on the sidelines during the ongoing conflict between a section of the saffron brigade and the state Government over the Amarnath yatra duration in Jammu.
While the dissidents, headed by Prof.Chaman Lal Gupta, wanted to watch with amusement the embarrassment being faced by the loyalists, led by Asok Khajuria, during the tussle between the yatris, wishing to start the pilgrimage three weeks before the schedule fixed by the Government and the Shrine Board and the police.
BJP loyalists, who have preferred to be on the fence, say that the action of the party high command in suspending seven BJP MLAs on charge of having allegedly indulged in cross voting during the Legislative Council election 13 months ago has fomented factional feud, hitherto unknown in the history of the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir.
They said after this action the dissidents have been on the move to lure a large number of BJP supporters to their camp. The result is that in various areas of the Jammu region the party units stand almost legless. However, the loyalists in the BJP say that action by the party high command was called for and despite some initial reverses the BJP would rise from the ashes in the near future. They alleged that since the dissidents have been working as "B" team for the National Conference it would be suicidal for the BJP if the party high command revoked the suspension order.
The saga of growing conflict between the dissidents and the loyalists in the state unit of the Congress is giving sleepless nights to the party high command.Congress leaders, owing allegiance to Saif-ud-Din Soz,said that the party high command had succeeded in bridging the gap between Soz and Ghulam Nabi Azad during the time two AICC general secret aries,Mohan Prakash and Janardhan Dewedi were in Srinagar but these efforts were nullified by a minister known for his loyalty to Azad.
The Soz loyalists have suggested to the party high command that it should direct all the Congress ministers to follow the policies and directions given by Soz and once it was done the spirit of discipline would get percolated to the grassroot level.
They said a divided congress had given added advantage to the PDP and the National Conference for expanding their bases and areas of influence in the otherwise congress dominated areas in the Jammu region and in those belts in the Kashmir valley where the Congress had done well in the 2008 elections.
