| Party to have new state president by Dec end | | Fillip in BJP organizational activities as summer reaches its crescendo | | early times report
Jammu, June 6: With membership drive being set into motion from June 14, the state unit of BJP is all set to have new president by the end of this year. As the summer heat reaches its crescendo by middle of this month, BJP's organizational activities will also see some heat, the leadership having planned a schedule of enrolling new members , which shall last for at least two months. Eyeing good prospects in 2014 Assembly polls, the party has also envisaged a sizable increase in the membership this time, at least 20% more than previous time it was held across the state .
Even as these activities are aimed at larger goal of strengthening the organization at the district and mandal level , the main focus will be on associating and involving more people with the party. Insiders say the thrust of the membership drive and a fillip in the organizational activities have been set on agenda as the party endeavour would be to have good number of seats in the Assembly in next polls. This apparently would mean that party needs to work hard to consolidate its vote bank by broadening its support base in Jammu region and the exercise of having more members on board in the drive this time is intended on this assumption.
In the meeting held today in presence of state, district and mandal level functionaries it was made clear that party units at all levels would need to put in more efforts in the membership drive and not merely take it as a routine exercise. The membership drive is held in the party after every three years which is closely followed by elections first at the mandal (Constituency) level. After electing mandal level polls the district presidents get elected and this is followed by the election of the state president. Insiders in the party say the election of the state president this time assumes significance in the backdrop of the fact that state unit of BJP is facing problems and troubles on multiple fronts coupled with the competition from rival faction as also its main political rival Congress in Jammu region.
Though completion of the process for electing state president would be followed by electing president at the national level for party, but it doesn't assume much significance as that is in routine and may not impact much on the state level organizational framework . However, the election of the new state president will determine future course in political terms as also in harmonizing organizational make up of the party, which is badly needed at this juncture, insiders suggest. It remains to be seen as to how things will move and who will take over as president for next term in J&K.
