“Omar says troops withdrawn from hinterland can be deployed on LoC to plug infiltration routes”

early times report
JAMMU, June 7: Chief minister Omar Abdullah is stated to have conveyed to the Centre that after their withdrawal from the hinterland, troops can be posted on the Line of Control (LoC) to plug infiltration routes.
Highly places sources in the government said the chief minister had suggested the Centre that by deployment of the troops, withdrawn from the state’s civilian areas, on the LoC, army could plug both conventional and non-conventional ingress routes.
“He feels that once the level of infiltration comes down to zero, the state can enjoy peace and political stability,” the sources added.
Sources said Omar, who was in favour of the revocation of AFSPA in a phased manner, was in favour of withdrawing troops from the hinterland and posting them on the LoC.
Sources also did not rule out the possibility of the chief minister discussing with the Centre the demand for restoration of autonomy to the state again in the light of the report of the interlocutors which favoured setting up a committee for reviewing all the central laws extended to the state after 1953.
NC holds the view that the restoration of autonomy could address both internal and external dimensions of the Kashmir issue. There are, however, few takers of the NC view point as it has already been opposed tooth and nail by the people of Jammu and Ladakh regions, besides BJP and some other political parties.
Sources said by now Omar could have taken up with the Centre the issue of NC resolution on autonomy but he was finding it hard to do so as his coalition partner Congress was opposed to the grant of autonomy to the state.
Sources said Omar was unhappy with the report of the interlocuters on two grounds. First, it does not support the NC plea for restoration of autonomy but simply favours the review of the central laws extended to the state after 1953. Secondly, it has not recommended the withdrawal of AFSPA but only favoured its review.
Omar has said that “a review that does not lead to revocation is pointless.”
