Come rains and Jammu shall be all mud and filth | | | early times report Jammu, June 7: With Monsoon just a couple of weeks away, Jammu is set for another round of inconvenience, disease and insanitation in the name of unending sanitation project that has held the cityites hostage for years now. The sanitation project of the city entrusted to NBCC has become a nagging sore for the city that becomes unbearable especially during the two months of monsoon as vehicular traffic and pedestrian movement become difficult besides highly unhygienic conditions on the city roads due to water logging. In addition to inconvenience to the locals, the NBCC's unending project has been major cause of irritation for the pilgrims of Mata Vaishno Devi and Shri Amarnath which pour in in huge numbers during this time of the year. With over 3 lakhs pilgrims already registered for the upcoming Shri Amaranth Yatra, a dug out city is ill prepared to receive such a huge influx of pilgrims and tourists. The Rs. 129 cr. Sewerage Project of the city was entrusted to NBCC and the work is being executed by UEED, but three years later, the agency has failed to complete work putting people to gross inconvenience for three long years. While opposition has alleged financial bungling in allotment and execution of project, Tara Chand, Minister incharge Housing and Dy CM has been attributing inordinate delays to poor survey before execution of project, but in between the political mudslinging, people of Jammu have faced tormenting times in these three years. Even today, the Busy BC Road, which is part of the Jammu Srinagar Highway has been dug out in the middle of the tourist season and weeks later, there is no hope of early completion of work. Similarly, Bakshi Nagar, Shakti Nagar, Jewel and several other parts of the city continued to be dug out for skewed sewerage project of Jammu and there is no end in sight at least for now.
