Without pollution control masks, cops inhale poisonous gases | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 8: Even as senior officers often say the department has enough pollution control masks with it, traffic police personnel are forced to inhale poisonous gases on the city roads as they are not given any mask to protect themselves. Ironically, the officers, on a number of occasions, have also given details about the number of masks procured by the department. But the masks have still not reached the cops. Along with men, a large number of women cops too are facing the risk of suffering from respiratory disorders in the absence of protective masks. It has been documented by the state pollution control department and several other NGOs working in the field of pollution control that almost all the rotaries and busy crossings in Jammu are most polluted and witness heavy traffic during peak hours yet the traffic police personnel are being deprived of the basic equipment. At the major city crossings, the traffic cops could be seen protecting themselves with handkerchiefs, or surgical masks. After the newly fitted traffic signal lights start functioning, the possibility is that the main crossings would witness steep rise in pollution levels. Then it would become mandatory for the department to equip its field staff with masks. |
