NC in shock as 55 panches, sarpanches resign | | | Early Times Report Jammu, June 8: It was June 8 today but for `democracy' it was as good, rather as bad as `Friday the 13th'. Scores of panches and sarpanches submitted their resignation through Imams of local mosques across Pulwama district. They also regretted their participation in Panchayat elections held last year. It was reminiscent of early 90s when National Conference workers expressed their dissociation with the party through paid advertisements, said a political activist. Significantly the Panchayat elections are perceived as a major achievement of the Omar led government. The activist perceives the latest development as a major setback to the National Conference. A local news agency quoting police sources said 55 panches and sarpanches have resigned in Pulwama district in particular. Most of the elected Panchayat members submitted their resignations to local imams and tendered unconditional apology to the people. The resignations have come in the wake of increased attacks on the elected panchayat members since last month. The police said that Jaish-e-Mohammad posters appeared at various places in Pulwama urging the panches and sarpanches to resign or face the consequences. Some of the panches and sarpanches who dissociated themselves from the panchayats through local Imams today have been identified as Meena Bano of Batpora, Pulwama, Abdullah Dar of Shepora Pulwama, Abdul Rashid Dhobi of Dregam Pulwama, Tariq Ahmad Dar of Shroo Payeen, Ghulam Nabi Khanday of Achkazu, Shehzada Bano of Nunusan, Nst jana of Darulgam, Nazia Kaunsar and many others. According to police sources there have been scores of attacks on the panchayat members since February. These attacks, police believe, scared them and finally forced them to resign.
