| Engineer Rashid's comment on return sparks debate among KPs | | | early times report Jammu, June 8: While a number of KP organizations have strongly criticized the statement of MLA Langate Engineer Abdul Rashid that "Pandits do not want to return to Valley….", the social networking sites too are loaded with debate, ruing it as 'unfortunate comment, albeit contesting it in a critical analytical manner and at the same posing certain 'uneasy' questions to him . In one such comments while dismissing MLA's statement, it has been observed that if it were as simple as packing up bags and returning home, Kashmiri Pandits would have done so a very long time ago. The reason: uncertainties stemming from unstable and unpredictable behavior of fundamentalists have kept them at a safe distance from home, yet close enough to return when favorable conditions prevail. In other words it has been asserted that Kashmiri Pandits are themselves not interested to return even as there is a segment of the Pandit community that may be reluctant to return, but the majority continues to suffer from the economic, social, and physiological scars of their displacement. For the few that have been fortunate to achieve success despite the horrors of ethnic cleansing, their reluctance to return is understandable. Terming MLA's uttering sweeping statement that clubs them together, certain comments have not hesitated in deciphering it as politically mischievous. In order to drive home the point, it has been observed by few that with the tacit support from politicians, militants and Islamic fundamentalists terrorized and murdered innocent Kashmiri Pandits and their families. No alternative was available except to flee from the clutches of certain death. "The politicians like MLA Rashid are only trying to deny Muslim community's culpability in the forced exodus of the Pandits…….", debated another on the site. In response to the statement which continues further in tone and tenor…….'No one in Kashmir is a fortune teller and cannot claim that situation has improved as the improvement in situation and return of peace are directly related to political solution of J&K. As long as dispute is unresolved uncertainty will continue to prevail and Kashmiri Pandits who are part and parcel of Kashmiri Muslims will have to make up their mind set clear that they will have to face ground situation clear whatsoever like Kashmiri Muslims are facing since last 22 years……' the KPs have contested it thoroughly contending if this amounted to conveying a veiled threat, or a warning shot against Pandits' return to the valley. Though in the ongoing debate many uneasy questions are being asked, the KPs have raised a fundamental query : " You desire a political solution of J&K. What would be the ideal political solution, as you see it? Would that be for J&K to fully integrate with Pakistan? India? Or advance as an independent nation…….? One wonders whether Engineer Rashid would be able to answer this or not in clear terms. There are other comments and soft arguments too. Some suggesting and concluding with comments on optimistic note like :' …..that times have changed, and for the first time in a long time realities on the ground are conducive for a meaningful negotiated return with the moderates still existing in Kashmir. It's just a matter of time in the foreseeable future that provisions for safety, dignity and mutual respect for the rights of both of us to co-exist will be worked out. When that happens, what others have called a Paradise on earth, we will together call, our home!'
