Omar not happy with interlocutors | | | early times report Jammu, June 8: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is not happy with the just review of Armed Forces Special Powers Act as suggested by interlocutors in their report. In an interview with a national daily, Omar had said," They packaged what they have heard. A review that doesn't lead to revocation its pointless." This was his first reaction after the interlocutors report was made public. He had earlier said that he will take time to react to this report. Omar by this comment had strongly hinted at his displeasure with the report especially on the point of the AFSPA, which he had made a corner stone of his politics and on which he had entered in confrontation with Army and conceded in accepting his failure on not delivering what he had promised. The interlocutors in their report about AFSPA had also said,"AFSPA is more the symbol of a problem that its cause. But symbols are important for peace…. Defence ministry needs to consider how to respond positively to this issue rather than negatively." It clearly suggest that the report is not asking for immediate revocation of the Act but at the same asks for ways so that it doesn't become a symbol of draconian law. This is some thing which Omar doesn't like. It's him who has brought this into the public debate, made every effort to project it in most draconian manner and tried to emerge as a crusader fighting for its revocation for the betterment of the people of the Kashmir. In the process he crossed swords with the Army, which brought peace in the State. The Chief Minister was forced to raise the pitch to deflect public attention after Haji Yousaf murder case and also to take away the attention from 'trust deficit'- a point raised by Union Home minister reinforced by interlocutors. Chief Minister is unable to emerge as the vanguard and custodian of the rights of the Kashmiri by not convincing Army to accept his logics and pleas had in fact blamed it for continuous infiltration. "If they (Army) plug the LoC, which they haven't been able to, we don't have problem," said Omar in an interview. It shows the desperation of the young, articulate CM who is now trying to shift goal post in his last ditch effort before the next general election. As per understandings arrived at with the Administration, the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir would be reviewing the progress of all Yatra related work, along both routes, early next week. The Governor would also be visiting Baltal and Nunwan Base Camps during 11th -13th June, 2012.
