CAIT demands National Policy for Retail Trade | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, June 9: The continuous efforts of Union Government to facilitate entry of MNC’s into retail trade of India today came under heavy attack by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) which has demanded the Government that instead of allowing MNC’s and big corporate houses in retail trade, the Government should bring out a " National Policy for Retail Trade" to upgrade and modernize the existing retail structure of India. Such a step will not only strengthen the economy and trade, but will also emerge as more revenue generator for the Governments. The statement is the outcome of a daylong seminar held at Jammu today organized by Chamber of Commerce, Jammu presided by its President Y V Sharma CAIT National Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal and National Organising Secretary Satish Garg regretted that in spite of their magnificent contribution to national exchequer, no Govt has ever taken retail trade on its priority particularly in post-independence era whereas on the other hand the Govt has provided all facilities and encouraging policies and benefits to corporate sector of the country. The leaders warned that such a situation will not be tolerated any further by the traders and if vote bank politics is the criteria, the traders will not hesitate to convert themselves into a vote bank. More than 5 crore business establishments are working in retail trade across India and about 22 crore people are dependent upon retail trade for their livelihood. Stoutly opposing the move of allowing MNC’s into retail trade, the trade leaders called upon the Government to consider unanimous report submitted in Parliament on 8th June, 2009 by the Parliamentary Standing Committee. Y V Sharma, President, Chamber of Commerce, Jammu while pointing out the above contradictory provisions between The Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and its Rules and Regulations demanded that the said Act should be kept in abeyance for five years and till such time the anomalies, disparities and stringent provisions of the Act should be amended in consultation with stakeholders. He further stressed the need of launching an Awareness Campaign by the Authorities in association with Trade Associations.
