Major Avtar Singh kills self, family | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, June 10: Former Army officer wanted in the murder of human rights activist Major Avatar Singh killed his wife and two of his children in his home before taking his own life, US authorities said. Avtar Singh, 47presently living at Selma, California, called police at around 6.15am on Saturday and told them that he had killed four people, US police authorities said. When police entered the home they found the bodies of Singh, a woman believed to be his wife and two children, aged 3 and 15. All four appeared to have died from gunshot wounds. Interestingly a 17-year-old boy also found in the home was suffering from severe head trauma and was 'barely alive,' police said. The teenager was taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery. Pertinently Singh had fled to the United States after he was accused of killing lawyer and human rights activist Jaleel Andrabi in the year 1996 in Srinagar. Andrabi had disappeared in March 1996 and his body was recovered 19 days later in river Jhelum near Kursoo Rajbagh here. An investigation into the killing blamed Singh and soldiers under his command, and also accused him of involvement in the killing of six other Kashmiri men. Pertinently Avtar Singh was arrested by Selma police in February 2011 when his wife reported that he had choked her. After Singh was taken into custody, police discovered that he was being sought in India. |
