Interlocutors' report fails to deal with real issues: FDR | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, June 10: Terming the Kashmir problem primarily a political issue, the Forum for Democratic Rights (FDR) said today that the Interlocutors' report fails to adequately deal with this fact. This was observed during a meeting of FDR conducted under the chairmanship of its president, Prof Zahoorudin. The meeting was convened to discuss the Interlocutors report on Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting said that the report avoids the question of the demand for some form of freedom/autonomy while it talks about Confidence Building Measures including political, economic and cultural. The list of CBMs is extensive but superficial. The fact is that normalcy is not possible without justice and a political resolution. This fact is evaded by the report. The report focuses primarily on the issue of Good Governance. This is no doubt a valid issue- corruption makes ordinary people suffer. But this is not the primary issue in Kashmir. The urgent questions of State repression and justice are wilfully ignored. The Economic recommendations of the report are deeply problematic. For example, it suggests the establishment of Special Economic Zones (SEZs). SEZs have been established in other parts of the country and they have caused widespread displacement and distress among people without creating employment or meaningful, democratic growth. The report tries to push these anti-people economic policies in the name of 'development'. The FDR members rejected the report in toto as they termed it as nothing but disappointment. It has been put forward by the government to befool the people of the state and to divert attention from the real issues. |
